The Family of Richard Kerton Snr

The spelling can be Kearton, Kirton etc.

Richard was baptised 20 September 1741, a son of Philip Kerton of Winksley Bank.  This entry could be a burial but seems more probably to be a baptism.

He married first Sarah Iddeson 24 April 1765 by licence at Kirkby Malzeard.  Richard was a wheelwright and Sarah was a spinster.  They were both of the parish.  The witnesses were John/William and Thomas Wood.

Sarah (wife of Richard, of Kirkby) was buried 24 May 1792 at Kirkby Malzeard.

Richard married secondly Elizabeth Nelson 21 October 1793 at Kirkby Malzeard, by banns.  Richard was a widower and a carpenter and Elizabeth was a spinster.  They were both of the parish.  The witnesses were Elizabeth Parker and John Wood.

There is the burial of an Elizabeth Kerton 28 May 1815 at Kirkby Malzeard.  She was aged 67.  There is an Elizabeth Nelson baptised 1 April 1748, a daughter of John, of Kirkby Malzeard, so this burial and baptism are in agreement.  Children of this marriage seem unlikely.

Richard was buried 18 June 1825 at Kirkby Malzeard.  He was aged 83 and of Kirkby.

Richard and Sarah’s children were:

1.        Elizabeth, baptised 2 February 1766 at Kirkby Malzeard (d of Richard, of Kirkby).

2.        Richard, born about 1768.  He is mentioned in the register as Richard jnr.

3.        Peter, baptised 5 December 1773 at Kirkby Malzeard (s of Richard, of Kirkby).
