The Family of Thomas Crack (1777 – 1857)

Thomas Crack was baptised 7 December 1777 a son of James Crack and Sarah at Whepstead. 

 

Thomas Crack (X) married Susan Marshall (X), after banns, at Whepstead, 27 July 1801.  They were single man and single woman of the parish.  The witnesses were James Crack (X) and John Hammond.

 

In 1841 at Saxham Farm, Whepstead, Thomas was a farmer, aged 60.  With him were Susan aged 45 (?), Susan aged 34 a female servant, Marshall aged 16, Simon aged 14, Joseph aged 10 and Sarah aged 6.  There was also William Hardy, an agricultural labourer, aged 23.  All were born in the county.

 

In 1851, at Busses Farm, Wickhambrook, Thomas was aged 72, a farmer of 90 acres employing 3 men and 1 boy, born at Whepstead.  His wife, Susan, was aged 67, a farmer's wife and born at Chevington.  With them was their granddaughter Sarah Crack, aged 15 and born at Ixworth.

 

Thomas was buried at Wickhambrook 17 January 1857.  He was aged 78.

 

In 1861, at Wickhambrook, in the next house to the Vicarage, Susan Crack was a widow, aged 77, and born at Chevington.

 

Susan was buried at Wickhambrook 24 October 1862.  She was aged 79.

 

Thomas and Susan's children were:

1.      Susan, born 3 June 1803 and baptised 5 June 1803 at Whepstead.  Susan’s maiden name is stated as Marshall.

2.      Thomas, born 23 December 1805 and baptised 12 January 1806 at Whepstead (late Marshall).

3.      George, born 19 March 1808 and baptised 17 April 1808 at Whepstead (late Marshall).

4.      John (1811 – 1850), born 4 September 1811 and baptised 15 September 1811 at Whepstead (late Marshall).  He appears to have married Sarah Nice 15 November 1831.  In 1841 he was living at Malting Cottage, Whepstead aged 30 an agricultural labourer, with Sarah aged 25 and both were born in Suffolk.  They appear to have had no children.  John was buried 13 May 1850 at Whepstead aged 38.

5.      James, born 4 June 1814 and baptised 9 June 1814 (privately) and received 7 July 1814 (late Marshall, labourer) at Whepstead (the IGI has ‘Themid’ for ‘Received).

6.      Richard, born 16 February 1818 and baptised 1 March 1818 at Whepstead (late Marshall, labourer).

7.      William, born 8 July 1820 and baptised 9 July 1820 at Whepstead (late Marshall, labourer). There is a suitable marriage for William to Lucy Jackson in the Thingoe district in the June quarter 1841. In 1841 at Church Hill Street, Whepstead, he may have been aged 20 an agricultural labourer with Lucy aged 24. Neither William Crack nor Lucy Crack has been found in the 1851 and later censuses.

8.      Marshall (1824 – 1846), born 11 December 1824 and baptised 26 December 1824 at Whepstead (late Marshall, labourer).  In 1841 he was at home aged 16.  Marshall was buried 17 July 1846 at Wickhambrook..  He was aged 22.

9.      Simon, born 14 March 1827 and baptised 1 April 1827 at Whepstead (late Marshall, labourer).

10.  Joseph, born 7 April 1831 and baptised 10 April 1831 at Whepstead (late Marshall, labourer).
