The Family of Joseph Crack

He was born 7 April 1831 and baptised 10 April 1831 at Whepstead (late Marshall, labourer), a son of Thomas Crack and Susan formerly Marshall.

 

In 1841 he was at home aged 10.

 

He married Ann Carter in the Risbridge district (includes Wickhambrook) in the June quarter 1849.

 

In 1851, at Cow Cross Green, Wickhambrook, Joseph was aged 19, an agricultural labourer, born at Whepsted.  His wife, Ann, was aged 23 and born at Wickhambrook, and their son, Charles was aged 1 and born at Wickhambrook.

 

Joseph and his family were not in the 1861 or 1881 census.  They emigrated on the ship ‘Walter Raleigh’ to Tasmania, settling at Sheffield. 

 

Ann died shortly after arriving and Joseph married secondly Jane Clerichue in 1863 at Deloraine, Tasmania.  After her death he married for a third time, to Mary Elizabeth.

 

His will was dated ? February 1907 and probate was granted 22 January 1908 (these dates were scarcely legible).

 

Joseph and Ann's children were:

1.      Charles Crack, born about 1849 at Wickhambrook.

In 1851 he was at home with his parents aged 1.

2.      Ephraim Crack, born 1851 at Wickhambrook, and registered in the Risbridge district in the December quarter 1851. He, of Mountain Vale, married Joanna Lyons, of Cluan, 12 January 1872 in the Roman Catholic Church at Longford, Tasmania.

3.      Walter Raleigh Crack, born 1855 on board ship. He married Margaret Mary Maria Harman (1862 – 1913).  He inherited under his father’s will.

Joseph and Jane’s child was:

4.      Thomas Crack, born 1864. He inherited under his father’s will.
