The Family of James Crack (1814 – 1884) of Whepstead and Bloomsbury

He was born 4 June 1814 and privately baptised 9 June 1814 and received 7 July 1814 (late Marshall, labourer) at Whepstead (the IGI has ‘Themid’ for ‘Received’.

 

He may have married Elizabeth Browning 22 February 1837 at Stepney.

 

He and Elizabeth have not been found in the 1841 census (but see Thomas below).

 

In 1851, at 26 Keppel Mews N(orth), St Giles in the Fields, James was aged 37, a general servant born in Websted, Suffolk.  Elizabeth, his wife, was aged 37 and born in Wapping, Middx and his children were Thomas aged 13, a general servant, William aged 11, James aged 7, Jane aged 5 and George aged 3, all born in Bloomsbury, and Mary Ann aged 5 months, born at St Giles, Middx.

 

In 1861, at 7 Russel Mews, Bloomsbury, Middx., James was aged 47, a coachman born at Webstead, Suffolk.  His wife, Elizabeth, was aged 47 and born at Wapping, Middx.  Their children were William aged 23 a groom, James aged 19 a groom, Jane aged 16, George aged 13, all born at St George, Bloomsbury and Mary Ann aged 9 born at St Giles, Bloomsbury.

 

In 1871 at 7 Russell Mews, St Georges Bloomsbury, James was aged 57 a coachman domestic, born at Webstead, Suffolk, Elizabeth his wife was aged 56 and born at Wapping and their two single children were James aged 28 a coachman domestic and Jane aged 26 no occupation both born at St George’s Bloomsbury.

 

In the 1881 census, living at 1 Dane Terrace, Ealing, there is a James Crack, a widower aged 67, born at Whepstead, a retired coachman, with his unmarried niece, Susan Crack, aged 37 and born at Southall, Middx.

 

His death was registered in the Brentford district (includes Ealing) in the December quarter 1884.  He was aged 70.

 

James and Elizabeth's children were:

1.      Thomas, born about 1837 at St George Bloomsbury.

In 1841, in John Street, Hamlet of Mile End Old Town, Thomas Crack aged 3 may have been with his grandparents, William and Mary Browning.

In 1851 he was at home with his parents aged 13, a general servant.

2.      William, born about 1837/9 at St George, Bloomsbury, and probably registered in the September quarter 1839 in the Bloomsbury district.

In 1851 he was at home with his parents aged 11.

In 1861 he was at home with his parents aged 23, a groom.

3.      James, born about 1841/3 at St George, Bloomsbury, and probably registered in the March quarter 1843 in the Bloomsbury district.

In 1851 he was at home with his parents aged 7.

In 1861 he was at home with his parents aged 19.

In 1871 he was at home with his parents aged 28 and a coachman.

4.      Jane, born about 1844 at St George, Bloomsbury and registered in the September quarter 1844 in the Bloomsbury district.

In 1851 she was at home with her parents aged 5.

In 1861 she was at home with her parents aged 16.

In 1871 she was at home with her parents aged 26.

5.      George, born about 1847 at St George, Bloomsbury.

In 1851 he was at home with his parents aged 3.

In 1861 he was at home with his parents aged 13.

6.      Mary Ann, born about November 1850 at St Giles, Bloomsbury, and registered in the December quarter 1850 in the St Giles district.

In 1851 she was at home with her parents aged 5 months.

In 1861 she was at home with her parents aged 9.
