The Family of Simon Crack (1827 – 1886) of Whepstead, Wickhambrook and Hargrave

He was born 14 March 1827 and baptised 1 April 1827 at Whepstead (late Marshall, labourer), a son of Thomas Crack and Susan formerly Marshall.

 

In 1841 he was at home, aged 14.

 

He married Frances Pettitt in the Risbridge district in the December quarter 1858.  Frances was baptised at Wickhambrook 19 November 1820, a daughter of William and Ann Pettitt (carrier).

 

In 1851, at Bansfield End (presumably Badmondisfield End), Wickhambrook, Simon was aged 24, an agricultural labourer, born at Whepstead.  Frances, his wife, was aged 30 and born at Wickhambrook.

 

In 1861, at Wickhambrook, Simon was aged 35 (?), an agricultural labourer born at Whepstead.  His wife, Frances, was aged 40 and born at Wickhambrook.  Also with them was William E. Pettit aged 4 (no relationship given) and born at Wickhambrook.

 

In the census of 1871, at Little Knowles Green, Hargrave, he was aged 44, an agricultural labourer, born at Whepstead.  With him was his wife, Frances, aged 50, a charwoman, born at Wickhambrook and his nephew, William Ephraim Pettitt, aged 14, an agricultural labourer, born at Wickhambrook.  William Ephraim Pettitt was baptised at Wickhambrook 25 January 1857 a son of Mary Ann Pettitt, baptised at Wickhambrook 30 September 1827, a daughter of William and Hannah Pettitt (carrier) and a sister of Frances.

 

In the census of 1881 Simon is next to Jeremiah Birch at Knowles Green.  He was aged 55, a farm labourer, born at Whepsted and his wife, Frances, was aged 60 and born at Wickhambrook.

 

Frances was buried at Wickhambrook 3 February 1882.  She was of Hargrave and aged 61.

 

Simon was buried in Bury St Edmunds Cemetery, 4 October 1886.  He died at Thingoe Union Workhouse in Bury and was a labourer of Hargrave, aged 65.  (His true age was around 59.)

 

Simon and Frances appear to have had no children.
