The Family of Samuel Banks (c.1771? – 1834?) of Shoreditch, London

Family Chart

Samuel Banks was born about 1771 (age at death).

Samuel married Elizabeth White on 4 February 1799 at St Mary-le-Bow, London.  If 1771 is his year of birth then he would have been aged about 28 when he married.

The family lived in Tabernacle Square until about 1809, then moved to North Place (c. 1812) and then to Plumber Street (c. 1817).

According to the baptism record of Matilda (1817), Samuel was an oilman (a seller of oil for lamps).  The marriage certificate of Mary Ann (1841) describes him as a bank clerk, deceased and his first name is omitted!

He had died by 7 June 1841.  A Samuel Banks was buried 29 September 1834 at Bunhill Fields aged 63.  He was of Kings Mews, Grays Inn Lane.  This address is the commission stables run by Osborn and Son (and Banks perhaps?) and therefore Samuel could very well have been the father of William.

Samuel and Elizabeth's children were:

  1. Samuel, born 11 September and baptised 13 October 1799 at St Leonard Shoreditch (of Tabernacle Square).
  2. Louisa, born 6 February and baptised 7 March 1802 at St Leonard Shoreditch (of Tabernacle Square).
  3. William, born 7 May and baptised 3 June 1804 at St Leonard Shoreditch (of Tabernacle Square).
  4. John, born 16 December 1806 and baptised 18 January 1807 at St Leonard Shoreditch (of Tabernacle Square).
  5. Mary Ann, born 20 February and baptised 30 April 1809 at St Leonard Shoreditch (of Tabernacle Square).
  6. Amelia, born 18 November 1811 and baptised 19 January 1812 at St Andrew Holborn (of North Place).
  7. Matilda, born 25 June 1816 and baptised 26 January 1817 at St Leonard Shoreditch (of Plumber Street, Oilman).
