The Family of Mary Ann Stanner formerly Banks

She was born 20 February and baptised 30 April 1809 at St Leonard Shoreditch (of Tabernacle Square), a daughter of Samuel Banks and Elizabeth formerly White.

She may have married William Charles Stanner, 7 June 1841 at St Leonard Shoreditch.  The register states that both were of full age, he (X) was a wax chandler of Haymarket, a son of John Stanner a turner.  She was a servant of Molley Street, a daughter of – Banks (deceased), bank clerk.  The witnesses were Robert Fawcett and Sophia Stanner (X).  Robert Fawcett may be the husband of Louisa (above), and this tends to support the placing of Louisa Fawcett in the family of Samuel Banks.  Mary Ann seems secure as she was baptised, married and buried in St Leonard Shoreditch and the age evidence is fairly appropriate.

In 1841 at 20 Molley Street, St Leonard Shoreditch, Tower Hamlets, (the pencil writing was very indistinct) were living Sarah Stanner of independent means aged 60-64, ?Joseph (male) a carman aged 30-34,?Mary Ann (female) aged 35-39, William (male) aged 20-24 a wax chandler and ?Mary Ann (female) aged 25 – 29.  The first four were not born in the county and Mary Ann, the probable wife of William was.  There appears to be another household in the house: a male aged 25-29 a coach ? and female aged 25-29 and ?Jane (female) aged 1, all born in the county.  This is probable because William Stanner is younger than the male, and the male was born in the county but William wasn’t.  This is further supported by the apparent double line between Mary Ann Stanner and the male.

There are two death registrations for Mary Ann Stanner in the December quarter 1848 in the Shoreditch district.  One is the daughter who died 29 December 1848.  There are two burials of Mary Anne Stanner in 1848 at St Leonard Shoreditch; one who was born in 1812, who is clearly the mother and one who was born in 1841 which is of the daughter.

Their children were
