The Family of Louisa Fawcett formerly Banks (1802 – 1851)

Louisa Banks was born 6 February and baptised 7 March 1802 at St Leonard Shoreditch (of Tabernacle Square), a daughter of Samuel Banks and Elizabeth formerly White.

She probably married Robert Fawcett, 11 October 1830 at St Luke Old Street, Finsbury.  A Robert Fawcett was a witness at the marriage of sister Mary Ann Banks in 1841 and this is the major reason for identifying this marriage of Louisa to Robert.

In 1841 at 18 Howards Green, St Lukes, Middx, Louisa Fawcett, a shawl maker was aged 30 - 34 and living in St Lukes, Middx., with Robert aged 35 – 39 a dyer.  With them were William aged 7, Ann aged 10, Emma aged 9, Eliza aged 6 and Mary aged 14 months.

In 1851 at 25 Bartholomews Terrace, St Lukes, Finsbury, Robert was aged 46, a dyer born in Shoreditch.  His wife, Louisa, was aged 39 and born in St Lukes (original seen, her age is adrift by some 10 years).  Their children were Ann aged 20, Emma aged 18, Robert (probably also a dyer as marks on the census suggest ditto marks) aged 16, Eliza aged 14, Mary aged 10, Louisa aged 8, Harriet aged 7, Rosina aged 4 and William aged 1.  All, except Emma who was born in Shoreditch, were born in St Lukes.

Louisa Fawcett’s death was registered in the June quarter 1851 in the St Lukes district.  This is not the daughter because Louisa was buried in London in 1851 and was aged 41, (again her age is adrift by 8 years).

In 1861, at 23 Ironmonger Row, St Luke, Finsbury, Robert was aged 53 a dyer born in Shoreditch, and his wife was Mary aged 42 and born in St Luke’s.  Robert’s children were Rosa aged 14 and William aged 12, both born in St Luke’s.  It is clear that Robert married again, though a suitable marriage has not been identified.

If this is the correct marriage Robert and Louisa’s children were:

Ann Fawcett, born 1831, St Lukes, London

Emma Fawcett, born 1833, Shoreditch, London

William Fawcett, born about 1833

Robert Fawcett, born 1835, St Lukes, London

Eliza Fawcett, born 1837, St Lukes, London

Mary Fawcett, born 1841, St Lukes, London

Louisa Fawcett, born 1843, St Lukes, London,

Harriet Fawcett, born 1844, St Lukes, London

Rosina Fawcett, born 1847, St Lukes, London

William Fawcett, born 1850, St Lukes, London.  In 1871 he appears to be a boarder aged 20, unmarried a labourer in a wool factory, born in St Lukes. Middx.  In the 1881 census he appears to be living at 26, Brownlow Road, London.  He was aged 31, a waiter and born in Hoxton, London.  His wife was Frances, aged 25 and a British subject, born at Mount Eliza, Australia.  There was also their son, William, aged 6 months, born in London.  Two lodgers were also living with the family, Matilda Brown (18, Hoxton, a mantle maker) and William Thomas Lewis (22, Frome, clerk).  Wiliam and Frances’s child was:

William Fawcett, born about October 1880, London.
