The Family of George Asbery junior (1808 – 1890)

He was born on 10 April 1808 at Bramley and baptised 26 June 1808 at Braithwell, a son of George Asbury and Ann (formerly Kesteven/Casthaven).

George Asbery married Ann Skelton at Braithwell, after banns, on 19 December 1839. George was aged 31, a bachelor and servant, of Bramley. Ann was aged 29, a spinster and servant, of Bramley, the daughter of John Skelton, a labourer.

In the 1841 census, at Bramley, George Asbery was an agricultural labourer aged 30-34 and born in the county. With him was Ann aged 30-34, not born in the county and Mary aged 9 months and born in the county.

In the 1851 census of Bramley, George was aged 42, a farm labourer and born at Bramley. His wife, Ann, was aged 40 and born at Mattersey, Notts. With them were their children Mary Jane, aged 10, Martha aged 8, John aged 6, Elizabeth aged 4 and Emma aged 1.

In 1861, in the High Street, Rotherham (1st Court, 2nd House, after 9 High Street), George was aged 53, a carter. With him was his wife, Ann, aged 51. Their single children were Mary Jane aged 21, a dressmaker, Martha aged 18, a dressmaker, John aged 16 an apprentice fender fitter, Elizabeth aged 14 and Emma aged 11.

Ann died 18 May 1863 of bronchitis. She was buried in Moorgate Cemetery with George (who originally bought the grave, {section 1 old No. 151} and was the grave owner), Thomas Astbury, (died 18 March 1890 aged 52), Emma Lowe and Thomas Lowe.

In the census of 1871, at Searle Yard, High Street, Rotherham, George was a widower, aged 62, a carter. His children were Mary Jane aged 29, housekeeper, John aged 26, a fender fitter and Emma aged 21, a machinist.

In the 1881 census of 73 Drummond Street, Rotherham, George was a widower, aged 75, a carter and living with his daughter, Emma Lowe.

He died 23 December 1890, aged 85, at 36, Kimberworth Road, Rotherham, of debility from old age. He was described as 'formerly a farm labourer'. The informant was his son, John Asbery, of the same address.

George was buried on 28 December 1890 in Moorgate Cemetery, Rotherham, aged 85.

George and Ann's children were

  3. John, born 15 December 1844 at Bramley and baptised 19 January 1845 at Braithwell.
  4. Elizabeth, baptised 30 August 1846 at Braithwell.
  5. Emma, born 1849/50 at Braithwell.
