Emma Asbery was born late 1849 or early 1850 at Braithwell {registered in the Rotherham district, in the March quarter 1850}.
In 1851, she was at home with her parents, aged 1.
In 1861, she was at home with her parents in the High Street, Rotherham (1st Court, 2nd House, after 9 High Street) aged 11, birth place blank but presumably born at Braithwell.
In 1871, at Searle Yard, High Street, Rotherham, Emma was living with her father, aged 21, a machinist, and born in Bramley. In the house next door, living with his mother, a tobacconist, was Thomas Lowe, aged 25, a tailor, born at Doncaster.
She married Thomas Lowe (registered in the Rotherham district {9c 726} in the September quarter 1871).
In 1881, at 73, Drummond Street, Rotherham, she was aged 30, a tailoress, born at Bramley. Her husband, Thomas was aged 35, a tailor, born at Doncaster. With them was her father, George Asbery, aged 75, a carter, born at Bramley.
Thomas Lowe was buried on 1 May 1889 in Moorgate Cemetery, Rotherham, aged 43. This is consistent with his age in the 1881 census.
In 1891 at 41 Frederick Street, Rotherham, in 3 rooms (the other houses had 4!) Emma (Low) was a widow aged 40, a tailoress (own account), born at Bramley.
In 1901, at 41 Frederick Street, Rotherham, in three rooms and working on her own account at home, Emma Lowe was a widow and aged 49, a confectioner and born at Bramley. With her was her unmarried niece, Edith Gandy (as Gaudy, in the Index), aged 25 and born at Hull with her daughter Jessie Gandy (Emma’s great niece), aged 4 and born at Rotherham.
In 1911 at 54 Drummond Street, Rotherham, Emma Lowe was aged 60, a widow and shop keeper (confectioner) and born at Bramley. She claimed to have had one child who was still living. With her was her daughter (!) Emma Jessie Lowe was aged 14. (This seems to be Edith Gandy’s daughter, Jessie, who was with Emma in 1901.)
Emma was buried on 30 July 1938 in Moorgate Cemetery, Rotherham, aged 88. This agrees with her birth registration quarter.
