The family of Alice Oates formerly Vollans (1870 – 1954)

I am very grateful to Patricia Burke for information on this family.

She was born 1870 at Brampton Bierlow and baptised 31 July 1870, a daughter of Joseph Vollans and Hannah (formerly Jackson).

In 1871, at home with her parents, she was aged 10 months and born at Hoober Hall.

In 1881 she was living at home, aged 10 and born at Brampton Bierlow.

In 1891, at 46 High Street, Wath, she was aged 20, a domestic servant (cook).

She married Sam Oates (brother of Ester Oates who married Allan Jackson Vollans) 14 June 1894, in the Rotherham district.

In the 1901 census of 50 Newhill (in the parish of West Melton), Wath on Dearne, living in 4 rooms, she was aged 30, born at Hoober (Staffs, sic), which is close to Newhill.  Her husband, Sam, was aged 32, born Newhill (Staffs, sic), a shoemaker.  Their son was Arthur, aged 6, born Newhill (Staffs, sic).

In 1911 (Index) in Wath, Alice was aged 41, Sam was aged 42, Arthur was aged 16, Sam was aged 7 and Esther was aged 6.

In 1918 they were living at 11 Crown Street, Swinton (S. Oates was the informant of his mother-in-law's death).

Alice died 23 December 1954.

Alice and Sam's child was:

Arthur Oates, born 20 September 1894 at Newhill.
