The Family of Mary Ann Mortlock formerly Pettit (1857 - 1936) of Wickhambrook and Denham

She was born 11 March 1857 and baptised 12 July 1857 at Wickhambrook, a daughter of George Pettit and Mary formerly Bye. 

 

In the 1861 census of Lady Mead Road, Wickhambrook, she was described as Ann aged 4 and born at Wickhambrook.

 

In the 1871 census of Baxters Green, Wickhambrook, she was aged 14 and born at Wickhambrook.

 

In the 1881 census she may have been an unmarried cook, aged 26, born at Wickhambrook, in the household of John Nunn, a farmer of 570 acres at Hall Farm, Fornham All Saints.  (At this time Joseph Nunn, aged 22, was an indoor farm labourer at Knowles Green Farm in the household of John Pettit.)

 

She married John James Mortlock on 16 November 1882, at All Saints Church, Wickhambrook, after banns.  He was aged 30, a bachelor and labourer of Denham, a son of William Mortlock, a carrier.  Mary Ann was aged 26, a spinster of Wickhambrook, a daughter of George Pettitt, labourer.  The witnesses were Charles Pettitt and Susan Pettitt.

 

In 1891, at Denham Street, Denham, John was aged 39, an agricultural labourer born at Denham.  Mary A, his wife, was aged 34 and born at Wickhambrook.  Their children were Mary J aged 7 and born at Barrow, Annie M aged 5 and born at Barrow and Henry A aged 4 and born at Denham.

 

In the 1901 census she and John were living in Denham, at Denham End, in a cottage of 4 rooms.  He was aged 49, an agricultural labourer and born at Dalham, Cambs.  Mary Ann was aged 44 and born at Wickhambrook.  With them was their son Henery A. Mortlock aged 14 an agricultural labourer on farm and born at Denham.

 

In 1911, at 1 Denham End, Denham, in 3 rooms, Mary Anne was aged 54 and born at Wickhambrook.   With her were John aged 59, a farm labourer, born at Denham.  They had been married for 28 years and had had 5 children 3 of whom had died.  With them was their unmarried son, Henry Alfred aged 24 and born at Denham.

 

In 1923 she was a mourner at the funeral of her sister in law Eliza Pettit.

 

Her death was registered in the Bury St Edmunds district (includes Denham) in the March quarter 1936.  She was aged 78.

 

Mary Ann and John’s children were:

Mary Jane Mortlock (1883 – 1897), born at Barrow and baptised 28 October 1883 at Denham (labourer, of Barrow).  Her death was registered in the Thingoe district in the June quarter 1897 aged 13.

Anna Maria Mortlock, born at Barrow and baptised 25 October 1885 at Denham (labourer of Barrow).

Henry Alfred Mortlock, born about 1887 at Denham. 

He married Maria Watson in the Bury St Edmunds district in the June quarter 1913. 

In 1923 Mr and Mrs H. Mortlock (nephew) were mourners at the funeral of Eliza Pettit. 

In the 1939 register, at Cottage, The Street, Barrow, Henry Alfred was an invalid with a date of birth of 12 March 1887.  Maria his wife had a date of birth of 2 May 1891, and their daughter, Violet M had a date of birth of 28 October 1923.  She was a restaurant waitress and unmarried.  She later married a Woods. 

Henry Alfred and Maria’s child was:

Violet May Mortlock (1923 – 2000), born 28 October 1923.  She married Leslie A. Woods in the Bury St Edmunds district in the September quarter 1953.  Her death was registered in the Gipping and Hartismere district in the June quarter 2000 with a date of birth of 28 October 1923.

Charley Victor Mortlock (1897 – 1898), born 2 May 1897 at Denham and baptised at Denham4 July 1897 (labourer).  His death was registered in the Thingoe district in the June quarter 1898 aged 1.
