I am
grateful to Judy Marsh for some of the information on this page.
John was baptised on 18 February
1775 at Great Bradley, a son of John and Mary
Bye.
John (X) married Elizabeth, as Bett Fenn, at Stradishall on 12 November 1805 after banns. They were bachelor and spinster of the parish and the witnesses were John Woollard (X) and William Twititiett Clarke. Elizabeth was the daughter of Robert Fenn and Susan.
Elizabeth was buried 27 July 1820 at Wickhambrook, aged 35.
In the 1851 census of Frogs Hall, Stradishall, there is a John Bye, a widower aged 80, an agricultural labourer, born at Great Bradley, living with a daughter, Susan aged 42 born at Wickhambrook and her husband George Worledge (i.e. Wallage) aged 42, an agricultural labourer, born at Stradishall. (This was checked against the original.)
There is a marriage at Wickhambrook 7 December 1838 for Susan Bye and George Wallage. Betsy Wallage was a witness at the marriage of Mary Bye and George Pettitt, 1839. This may suggest that Betsy and Mary were sisters in law, but they could be more distantly related or not at all.
There may be some confusion in this section and the originals need to be checked.
John Bye was buried 27 May 1854 at Wickhambrook, aged 83. He was of Stradishall.
The children of John and Elizabeth Bye were:
John Bye (1806 – 1816), baptised 17 November 1806 at Wickhambrook, a son of John and Elizabeth. He was buried 11 March 1816 at Wickhambrook aged 9.
Susannah Bye (1809 – 1878), baptised 2 February 1809 at Wickhambrook, a daughter of John and Elizabeth.
She, as Susan Bye, a daughter of John, married George Wallage, a son of John, 7 December 1838 at Wickhambrook.
In 1841 at Mill Lane, Stradishall, next to John Worledge 60, an agricultural labourer, Joseph, 25 an agricultural labourer, James 25 an agricultural labourer and Elizabeth 20, all born in the county, were George Worledge aged 30 an agricultural labourer and Susaen (sic) aged 30, both born in the county.
In the 1851 census of Frogs Hall, Stradishall, Susan was aged 42 born at Wickhambrook and her husband George Worledge (i.e. Wallage) was aged 42, an agricultural labourer, born at Stradishall. With them was Susan’s father, John Bye, a widower aged 80, an agricultural labourer, born at Great Bradley. (This was checked against the original.)
In 1861 at Frogshall, Stradishall, George Worlledge was a farm labourer aged 53 and born at Stradishall and his wife, Susan was aged 52 and born at Wickhambrook. With them was ?Judith Norman, niece, aged 14 and born at Bury St Edmunds.
In 1871 at Frog Hall, Stradishall, George Worlledge was aged 63, an agricultural labourer born at Stradishall and Susan, his wife, was aged 63 born at Wickhambrook.
Susan (Worledge) was buried at Stradishall 17 February 1878 aged 69 (registered as Wallidge aged 69 in the Risbridge district – includes Stradishall – in the March quarter 1878).
In 1881, at Street, Stradishall, as a lodger, George Worlledge was a widower aged 73 and born at Stradishall.
In 1891 at an institution in the Risbridge district, George Wallage was aged 83 and born in Stradishall.
George Wallage was buried 9 January 1894 at Stradishall (no age given). His death was registered in the March quarter 1894 in the Risbridge district aged 85.
They appear to have had no children.
Robert Bye, baptised 3 February 1811 at Wickhambrook a son of John and Elizabeth. He married Jane Meaton at St John Waterloo 6 April 1834.
In 1841 in High Street, Peckham, Robert was aged 30 a gardener and Jane was aged 30 and they were not born in the county. With them were Susan aged 6, William aged 4 and John aged 1 who were all born in the county.
In 1851 at 2 Battens Yard, Camberwell, Robert was aged 40 a working gardener born at Wickhambrook, Jane was aged 40 and born at Chichester and their children were Susan aged 16, John aged 11, Robert aged 8, George aged 5, Henry aged 2 and an infant daughter aged 1 month, all born in Camberwell. There were also two lodgers, widow Frances Hislop aged 82 an annuitant born in Yorkshire and her granddaughter Fanny Lee aged 4 born in Camberwell.
There are possible deaths registered for Jane in the September quarter 1853 and for Robert in the March quarter 1855.
None of the family has been found in 1861.
Robert and Jane’s children may have been:
Susan Bye, born about 1835 in Camberwell and baptised 11 October 1835 at Wickhambrook a daughter of Robert, labourer, and Jane of Peckham.
William Bye, born 1836 in Camberwell, and baptised 22 January 1837 at Camberwell a son of Robert and Jane.
John Bye, birth registered in the Camberwell district in the March quarter 1840.
?Eliza Bye, birth registered in the Camberwell district in the September quarter 1841.
Robert Bye, birth registered in the Camberwell district in the March quarter 1843.
George Bye, birth registered in the Camberwell district in the June quarter 1846.
Henry Bye, birth registered in the Camberwell district in the December quarter 1848.
Daughter Bye, born about February 1851 in Camberwell.
William Bye, baptised 28 February 1813 at Wickhambrook, a son of John and Elizabeth labourer of Wickhambrook.
In 1851 he may have been at 13 Eaton Square, St George Hanover Square, aged 37, unmarried and a coachman born in Suffolk, Wickham. He was with George Bye aged 27 an unmarried groom born at Suffolk, Ballstone.
Mary Bye (1815 - 1893), baptised 22 April 1815 at Wickhambrook, a daughter of John and Elizabeth, of Wickhambrook, labourer. This is a bit late as she consistently indicates a birth in 1812/13 in the censuses and at death, but other evidence fits (name of father and where born). She married George Pettitt at Wickhambrook 12 April 1839 and died 12 March 1893 at Wickhambrook, aged 80.
John Bye, baptised 6 April 1818 at Wickhambrook, a son of John and Elizabeth, labourer of Wickhambrook.
