The Family of George Pettit (1848 - 1926) of Wickhambrook and Wood Ditton

He was baptised 6 January 1848 at Wickhambrook, a son of George Pettit and Mary formerly Bye.

 

In the 1851 census of Baxters Green Wickhambrook, he was living with his parents, aged 3, born at Wickhambrook.

 

In the 1861 census of Lady Mead Road, Wickhambrook, he was living with his parents, aged 13, a labourer, born at Wickhambrook.

 

In the 1871 census of Baxters Green. Wickhambrook, he was living with his parents, aged 23 and an agricultural labourer born at Wickhambrook.

 

He may have married Susanna Death in the December quarter of 1871 (registered in the Risbridge district).

 

In the 1881 census of Wood Ditton, Cambridge, he may have been aged 30, a farm steward and groom (bailiff), born at Wickhambrook.  His wife was Susan, aged 29 and born at Wickhambrook and their children were Fanny J aged 8, born at Wickhambrook and George W. aged 6, born at Saxon Street, Cambridge, both scholars.

 

In 1891 at Saxon Street/Hall Cottage, Woodditton, in three rooms, he was aged 39, an agricultural labourer, born at Wickhambrook.  Susanna was aged 38 and their son, William, was aged 16 an agricultural labourer and born at Woodditton.  At the Villa, Saxon Street, Woodditton was Adeline Surrage aged 16 a servant and born at Durham.

 

In the 1901 census of Saxon Street, Wood Ditton, Cambs., he may have been aged 49, a groom, born at Wickhambrook.  His wife, Susan was aged 48 and born at Wickhambrook.  With them were their married daughter-in-law, Adeline Pettit, aged 25, born at Durham and their granddaughter, Minnie Jane, aged 7 weeks, born at Wood Ditton.

 

In 1911, at Saxon Street, Wood Ditton, in 5 rooms, George was aged 59 a farm foreman born in Wickhambrook.  His wife, Susannah was aged 58 and also born at Wickhambrook.  They had been married for 39 years and had had two children both of whom were still living.

 

His death was registered in the March quarter 1926 in the Newmarket district (includes Woodditton).  He was aged 77. 

 

In 1939 (register), Susan, with a date of birth of 26 July 1852, was living with George and Adeline Pettit.

George William Pettit, born 22 December 1874 (1939 register).  George William Pettit married Adelaide Surrage in the Newmarket district in the September quarter 1899. 

In 1911, at 6 Heath Terrace, Cheveley Road, Newmarket, William Pettit was aged 35 a stableman at racing stables and born at Saxon Street, Newmarket.  Adeline his wife was aged 35 and born at Durham.  They had been married for 11 years and had had two children both of whom were still living.  They were Minnie aged 10 and Gladys aged 7 both born at Newmarket. 

In 1939 (register) at the Cottage, All Saints Road, Newmarket, George W was a sacksman at a racing stables with a date of birth of 22 December 1874.  Adeline had a date of birth of 13 April 1875, udd, and Susan Pettit, widow had a date of birth of 26 July 1852. 

George William and Adeline’s children were:

Minnie Jane Pettit, born about February 1891.

Gladys Pettit, born about 1903.
