The Family of Jonathan Noble of Wessington

Jonathan Noble was born about 1830, at Wessington, a son of Mark and Jemima Noble.  He was an agricultural labourer in 1851.  In 1861 he was single and a master butcher.

He married first Sarah Barker in the Derby district in the September quarter 1865.  Sarah’s death was registered in the Chesterfield district in the September quarter 1869 aged 29.

In the 1871 census at Wessington Jonathan was aged 39, a widower and a farmer and butcher.  His son, George, was aged 3 and there was also a housekeeper, Mary A. Holmes aged 36.  All were born at Wessington.

Jonathan married secondly Susan Kirby in the Billesdon (Leics.) district in the September quarter 1876.  Susannah Noble’s death was registered in the Chesterfield district in the December quarter 1878 aged 37.

In the 1881 census at Wessington, Jonathan was a widower aged 49, a farmer of 20 acres.  His son George was aged 13 and both were born at Wessington.  There was also a housekeeper, Elizabeth B. Lacey aged 37 and born at Breedon, Leics.

Jonathan apparently married thirdly Elizabeth Walker in the December quarter 1881 in the Woburn district (is this possible?).

In the 1891 census at New Wessington, Jonathan was aged 60, a farmer born at Wessington.  His wife, Elizabeth was aged 58 and born at Middleton.  His son, George Noble, was aged 23 and his daughter Susannah was aged aged 12.  Both children were born at Wessington.

Jonathan died 16 June 1893 (registered in the Chesterfield district aged 62).  He was of Wessington, a farmer and butcher.  Probate was granted 25 August 1893 at Derby to George Noble, farmer and butcher and his effects were £192.10s.6d.

In the 1901 census Elizabeth was with her step-son, George.  She probably died 15 January 1908 (aged 74).  She was of Sherwood Street, Newton Blackwell (near Tibshelf), a widow.  Administration was granted 9 September 1908 at Derby to Granville Walker Slack (born 1874 and living at Tibshelf in 1911), a colliery pit bank manager and her estate was £110.14s.6d.

Jonathan and Sarah‘s child was:

1.      George Noble, born about 1867.  His birth was probably registered in the Chesterfield district in the September quarter 1867.  In 1901 at New Wessington, George was aged 33, a butcher and farmer and was with his sister Susannah Noble aged 22, both were born in Wessington.  Also with them was Elizabeth Noble, George’s mother-in-law (i.e. step-mother), aged 67 and born at Middleton.  There was also a servant, Thomas Collegde, aged 23, a carter on farm, born at Wessington.  George Noble, of Wessington, died 24 November 1904 (registered in the Chesterfield district and aged 36).  Probate was granted 1 June 1904 at Derby to Thomas Hobson, farmer and Samuel Hurt Hunt, butcher.  His effects were £1,272.2s.2d.

Jonathan and Susannah’s child was:

2.      Susannah Noble, birth registered in the Chesterfield district in the December quarter 1878.  She married James Ashbey in the Chesterfield district in the June quarter 1901.
