Susannah
Noble’s birth was registered in the
Chesterfield district in the December quarter 1878, a daughter of Jonathan and Susannah Noble.
In the 1881
census at 23 Friday Yard, Wessington, Susannah Noble was a boarder aged 2 and
born at Wessington with the family of Joseph Kiddy, a
merino framework knitter.
In 1891
she was with her father and in 1901 with her half-brother George.
She
married James Ashbey in the Chesterfield district in
the June quarter 1901.
In the 1911
census, at Moorside Farm, Tansley,
Matlock, in 7 rooms, James Ashbey was aged 40 a
farmer born at Dorissthorpe (?), Leics. His wife, Susannah was aged 32 and born
at Wessington. They had been married
for 9 years and had had 4 children one of whom had died. The remaining three were Nellie
Elizabeth Noble Ashbey aged 6, Harold Noble Ashbey aged 4 and Susan Noble Ashbey
aged 1, all born at Tansley. There was a general domestic servant,
Edith Riley aged 17 born at Wessington and a waggoner
on farm, Gervase Edward Taylor aged 16 born at
Matlock.
James Ashbey died 1 November 1949 (registered in the Chesterfield
district aged 78). He was of Church
Farm, Brackenfield, Derbys.
Probate was granted 27 January 1950 to Harold Noble Ashbey
and George William Statham, farmers.
Susannah
Ashbey, widow of the same address, died 26 June
1962. Administration was granted 26
July 1962 at London to Nellie Elizabeth Handford,
married woman.
James
and Susannah’s children were:
1.
Joseph Noble Ashbey (1903 – 1908),
birth registered in the Belper district in the March
quarter 1903. His death was registered
in the Bakewell district in the September quarter
1908 aged 5. He was buried in Holy
Trinity, Tansley, churchyard
5 July 1908.

Nellie Elizabeth Noble Ashbey (1904 – 1998),
birth registered in the Bakewell district in the
September quarter 1904. She married
John W Handford.
In 1939 she (date of birth 2 July 1904) was with her father James and 3
others in the Chesterfield RD. John
W. Handford appeared to be at a different
address. No children have been
found. Nellie Elizabeth Noble Handford died 23 November 1998 (registered in the
Chesterfield district with a date of birth of 2 July 1904) and probate was
granted 8 April 1999 at Leeds.

Harold Noble Ashbey (1906 – 2001),
birth registered in the Bakewell district in the
December quarter 1906. On 6 June
1930, he, with Edward Ashbey, witnessed a
brewer’s lorry being driven very fast down a hill at Brackenfield. It failed to negotiate a corner and
crashed into the wall of Brackenfield church. He and Edward gave evidence at the
driver’s trial who was acquitted of driving whilst drunk (Derbyshire
Times 28 June 1930). He (elder son)
married Annie Hopkinson, of Woodhead Farm, Clay
Cross, in Clay Cross church, February 1937. His best man was his brother, Mr E. Ashbey and the couple were to live at Shirland
(Derbyshire Times 12 February 1937).
In 1939 he (birth year 1906) was living (Harold M in the index) with
Annie and one other whose record is closed, in the Chesterfield RD. Harold Noble Ashbey
died 15 January 2001 (birthdate 30 August 1906 and
registered in the Chesterfield district) and probate was granted 7 September
2001 in Manchester.

Susan Noble Ashbey (1909 – 1999),
birth registered in the Bakewell district in the
September quarter 1909. In 1939 she
appeared as Susan N. Towndrow (Ashby) in the
household of James Ashbey with a date of birth of 22
August 1909. She married John Towndrow in the Chesterfield district in the June quarter
1940. Her death was registered in
the December quarter 1999 with a date of birth of 22 August 1909.

James Edward Noble Ashbey (1913 – 1991),
birth registered in the June quarter 1913 in the Chesterfield district. He was known as Edward. In 1930, he and Harold (see above) gave
evidence at a trial. In 1939 he
(birth year 1913) was with his father in the Chesterfield RD. James’s death was registered in
the June quarter 1991 in the Chesterfield district, with a date of birth of 10
April 1913.
