The Family of Thomas Jolly of Barrow

He was baptised at Barrow, 5 October 1794, a son of Jeremiah Jolly and Mary formerly Fordham.

He (X) married Catharine Drake (bachelor and spinster of the parish), after banns, with consent of parents at Barrow, 31 January 1820.  The witnesses were William Manning (X), Charles Bird and Thomas Drake.

 

In the 1841 census of Barrow Thomas Jolly was aged 45, Catherine was aged 45 with Samuel aged 20, William aged 15 and Charles aged 15.  All except Catherine were agricultural labourers and born in the county. 

 

Catherine was buried 8 March 1845 at Barrow.

 

In 1851, at Barrow Green, he, a lodger, was aged 59, a widower and agricultural labourer, born at Barrow.  He was with Samuel Jolly and his family and was very probably Samuel’s father. 

 

He has not been found in the 1861 census.

 

In 1871 at Thingoe Union (Workhouse) in Mill Lane Bury St Edmunds, Thomas was an inmate, a widower aged 81, an agricultural labourer born at Barrow. 

 

Thomas and Catherine’s children were:

Samuel Barrow, baptised 25 November 1821 at Barrow.  He married Emily Fuller at Barrow, 5 February 1848 at Barrow.

In 1851 at Barrow Green, he was married, aged 26 and an agricultural labourer born at Barrow.  His wife, Emily, was aged 20 and born at Barrow and their children were William aged 2 and James aged 1 both born at Barrow.  Also with them was Thomas Jolly, lodger, who is very probably Samuel’s father (see above).

In 1881 he was living at the Green, Barrow, aged 59, a shepherd, born at Barrow.  Emily, his wife, was aged 50 and born at Barrow.  With them were their unmarried children James (30) a bricklayer’s labourer, born at Barrow, Maria (28) ‘work in the fields’, born at Barrow, and Bertha (10) born at Barrow.  There was also their grand-daughter, Laura (8) born at Barrow.  Samuel and Emily’s children were

William, baptised 25 December 1848 at Barrow.  In 1851, at Barrow, he was aged 2.  In 1881, at Potash Cottages, Great Saxham, aged 31 an agricultural labourer.  His wife, Ann was aged 35.

William and Ann's children were:

Angelina, born c. 1874 at Great Saxham.  In 1881, at home, she was aged 6.  She married December quarter 1893 in the Thingoe district.

George William, born c. 1875 at Great Saxham.  In 1881, at home, he was aged 5.

Mary Ann, born c. 1877 at Great Saxham.  In 1881, at home, she was aged 3.

Walter Samuel, born c. 1878 at Great Saxham.  In 1881 he was at home, aged 3.

Henry James, born c. January 1881 at Great Saxham.  In 1881 at home, he was aged 2 months.

James, baptised 24 February 1850 at Barrow.  In 1851 at Barrow, he was at home, aged 1.

Maria, baptised 25 December 1851 at Barrow.  Her child was

Laura, baptised 25 December 1872 at Barrow.

Charles (1853 - 1853), baptised 25 April 1853 at Barrow and buried 1 May 1853 at Barrow.

Eliza, baptised 11 June 1854 at Barrow.

Charles (1857 - 1858), baptised 26 March 1857 at Barrow and buried 13 January 1858 at Barrow.

Charles (1859 - 1859), baptised 2 February 1859 at Barrow and buried 8 February 1859 at Barrow.

Sarah Ann, baptised 6 April 1862 at Barrow.

Frederick (1868 - 1869), baptised 6 September 1868 at Barrow and buried 2 January 1869 at Barrow.

Bertha, baptised 24 March 1871 at Barrow.  In 1881 at The Green, Barrow, she was at home aged 10.

William, baptised 6 June 1824 at Barrow.

Charles, baptised 16 April 1826 at Barrow.

George (1828 - 1829), baptised 27 April 1828 at Barrow and died 8 September 1829.
