John Jolly was baptised at Barrow, 8 April 1798, a son of Jeremiah Jolly (labourer) and Mary formerly Fordham.
He married Sarah Death at Hargrave, 3 November 1825.
In 1841 in Street, Barrow, John was aged 40 an agricultural labourer, Sarah was 35, Harriett 15, James 14, William 9, Amey 6 and Samuel 2 months. All were born in the county.
In 1851, at Barrow, he was aged 52 and a gardener and Sarah was aged 44. Their children were William aged 19 an agricultural labourer, Samuel Death aged 10 and Robert aged 7. All were born in Barrow.
In 1861, at The Street, Barrow, John Jolly was aged 60 a gardener born at Barrow. His wife, Sally, was aged 50 and born at Hargrave. Their son was Samuel aged 20 a railway porter born at Barrow.
In 1871 at Street, Barrow, John was aged 70 a gardener, domestic servant and Sarah was aged 64. Both were born in Barrow.
In Barrow churchyard two headstones were found (north-west corner) marking the graves of John Jolly and William, his son. They read “In memory of John Jolly for upwards of 30 years a gardener at Barrow Rectory who died April 6 1872 aged 74 years The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away Blessed be the name of the Lord” and “William son of John and Sarah Jolly Born 1831 Died 1863? The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away Blessed be the name of the Lord”.
In the register at Barrow is recorded the burial of John Jolly 12 April 1872 aged 74.
In 1881 Sally Jolly, a widow, aged 73 and born at Barrow, was living with her daughter Harriot Rosbrook, at Grocer’s Shop, Barrow Street, Barrow.
The children of John and Sarah Jolly were:
Harriot, baptised 27 December 1825 at Barrow. She married Henry Rosbrook at Barrow, 20 November 1851. In 1881 she was living at Grocers Shop, Barrow Street, Barrow, aged 54 and born at Barrow. With her were her husband, Henry, aged 56, a grocer, and children Jane A. aged 19, unmarried and a grocer’s assistant, and Ernest E. aged 12, a grocer’s assistant, all born at Barrow. There was also a granddaughter, Ellen Rosbrook, aged 3, born at Culford, and Sally Jolly, Henry’s mother-in-law, a widow, aged 73, born at Barrow.
Henry and Harriot’s children were:
Arthur James, baptised 6 February 1853 at Barrow. In 1881 he was with his widowed aunt,
Annie Jolly, at 22 Ormsby Street, London, aged 28, a
dyer’s packer and born at Barrow.
Henry,
baptised 16 July 1854 at Barrow. In
1881 he was living at Culford, aged 28, a groom
(domestic servant), born at Barrow.
His wife, Jane, was aged 25 and born at Fornham,
almost the next village to Culford). With them was their son, William H.,
aged 2 and born at Culford.

Jane Augusta (1862 - 1944), born 19 October 1862 and baptised 1 January 1863 at
Barrow. She married Charles William Pettit at
Newmarket, 2 July 1883 and died 7 July 1944.
Ernest Edmund, baptised 1 June 1868 at Barrow.
James, baptised 25 December 1827 at Barrow. In 1851 at Woodhouse Street, Warwick St Mary, he was aged 23 a gardener. His wife, Harriet was aged 21 and his son, John W. was aged 4 and born at Warwick.
William (1831 – 1853), baptised 16 October 1831 at Barrow.
In 1851 he was at home with his parents aged 19.
He was buried, 9 June 1853, in the churchyard at Barrow. His headstone, close to his father’s, reads “William son of John and Sarah Jolly Born 1831 Died 1863? The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away Blessed be the name of the Lord”.
Amey, baptised 5 April 1835 at Barrow. She married Thomas Doe at Barrow, 12 November 1857. In 1881 John and Amy Doe were living at Carter Street, Fordham, Cambs. Amy was aged 46 and born at Barrow and John was aged 46 and born at Culford. He was a publican of the Crown. With them was their unmarried son, William, aged 22 and born at Barrow, an “assistant in the business”. John and Amy’s son was
William Henry, baptised 6 March 1859 at Barrow.
Samuel Death (1841 - 1879), baptised 9 May 1841 at Barrow. He married Anastasia Pigrem at Barrow, 10 December 1863. His death is registered in the March quarter 1879 in the Hackney district (1b 382). He was aged 38. In 1881 Annie Jolly was a widow, living at 22 Ormsby Street, London. She was a widow, aged 38 and born at Great Canfield, Essex. With her were her children Catherine, aged 13, John aged 11 and Charles aged 3, all born at Shoreditch, London. Also with her was her nephew, Arthur Rosbrook, aged 28, a dyer’s packer and born at Barrow.

John Samuel, born 15 January 1870 and baptised 13 February 1870 at St Leonard’s Shoreditch.
Charles, born about 1877 at Shoreditch.
Robert, baptised 21 January 1844 at Barrow. In 1851 at Barrow, he was aged 7. He married Martha Sparrow at Barrow, 19 October 1870. In 1881 he was living at Desning Hall Cottages, Gazeley. He was aged 36, a groom and gardener (Domestic) born at Barrow. His wife, Martha, was aged 37 and born at Barrow. Their children were Fredrick aged 9 and born at Gazeley, Minnie M. aged 6 and born at Gazeley, Arthur J. aged 4 at Gazeley and Herbert R. aged 1 and born at Desning Hall, Gazeley.
Robert and Martha’s children were:
Frederick, born about 1871 at Gazeley.
Minnie M., born about 1874 at Gazeley.
Arthur J., born about 1876 at Gazeley.
Herbert R., born about 1879 at Desning Hall, Gazeley.
