The Family of George Jolly (1802 – 1876) of Barrow

George Jolly was baptised at Barrow, 24 October 1802, a son of Jeremiah Jolly (labourer) and Mary formerly Fordham. 

In the Barrow register is the baptism of Emily Jolly, the daughter of George Jolly and Maria Fuller, 4 May 1829.

 

On 10 August 1831 an order was made for him (of Denham) to pay to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the poor of Barrow 1s.6d a week (Maria Fuller was ordered to pay 1s a week) for the maintenance of a female bastard child, born 9 July 1831 to Maria Fuller in the house of Thomas Fuller.  He also had to pay costs of 8s.  This child appears to be Henriette Fuller, the daughter of Maria Fuller, baptised at Barrow 25 December 1831.

 

He (X) married Maria Fuller (X) (bachelor and spinster of the parish) at Barrow, 26 October 1833 after banns.  The witnesses were Henry Fuller (X) and Eliza Wiseman (X).

 

In 1841, at Street, Barrow, George was aged 35 an agricultural labourer.  With him were Maria aged 35. Emaly Jolly aged 12, Henrietta Jolly aged 9, Samuel aged 3 and Phylip aged 2 months?  There was also Maria Wiseman aged 65.  All were born in the county.

 

In 1851, at Street, Barrow, he was aged 46 and an agricultural labourer.  His wife was Maria aged 43 and their children were Samuel aged 13 and Philip aged 11 both agricultural labourers and Sarah Ann aged 6, Susanna aged 4 and Ellen aged 1.  All were born in Barrow.

 

In 1861, at Barrow, next to William, George was aged 52, an agricultural labourer and Maria, his wife, was aged 50.  Their children were Samuel aged 22. An agricultural labourer, Susannah aged 15 and Ellen aged 12.  Everyone was born at Barrow.

 

In 1871 at Street, Barrow, next to Samuel, George Jolley was aged 69 a farm labourer.  His wife, Maria was aged 62 and their single children were Philip aged 29 a farm labourer and Susannah aged 25.  There were also grandchildren George aged 2 and Edgar aged 1.  All were born in Barrow.

 

He was buried at Barrow, 10 October 1876.

 

In 1881 Maria was a widow and living at ‘Cottage’, Barrow Street, Barrow, a pauper, aged 74 and born at Barrow.  With her was her unmarried daughter Sussannia, aged 34, an agricultural labourer, born at Barrow.  There were also two grandchildren, George Jolly aged 13, an agricultural labourer and Ellen Jolly aged 9, both born at Barrow.

 

Maria was buried at Barrow 22 September 1881.

 

George and Maria’s children appear to be:

Emily (Jolly), baptised 4 May 1829 at Barrow (parents George Jolly and Maria Fuller).

Henrietta (Fuller), baptised 25 December 1831 at Barrow (mother Maria Fuller).

Eliza (1834 - 1835), baptised 28 December 1834 at Barrow and was buried 15 April 1835 at Barrow.

Samuel, baptised 9 February 1836 at Barrow and died ? 15 February 1836 (needs checking from the Barrow burial register).  BUT is he the Samuel Jolly who was aged 13 in the 1851 census and 45 in the 1881 census of Cottage, Barrow St, Barrow, an agricultural labourer, born at Barrow, married to Harriet, aged 40 born at Great Saxham?  Samuel Jolly married Harriet Manning 30 September 1865 at Barrow.

Philip, baptised 15 February 1842 at Barrow.  In 1851 he was aged 117.  He married Elizabeth.  In 1881 he was at Denham Castle Cottages, Gazeley, aged 35, a groom and gardener, with his wife Elizabeth who was aged 23.

Sarah Anne, baptised 30 July 1843 at Barrow.  In 1851 at Barrow she was aged 6.  She may have been buried at Barrow, 2 November 1878.  She may have married Edwin Beaumont.  In 1881 Edwin (46) and Sarah (37) were living at 21 Church Street, Gillingham.  He was a labourer, born at Gillingham and she was born at Barrow.  With them were their children John 15, errand boy, born Rainham, Arthur, 12, an errand boy, born Rainham, Caroline, 6, born Gillingham and Frederick, 1 born at Gillingham.

Susannah, baptised 4 July 1847 at Barrow.  In 1851 at Barrow, she was aged 4.  In 1881 she was living at ‘Cottage’, Barrow Street, Barrow, unmarried and aged 34, an agricultural labourer, born at Barrow.  With her were her mother Maria (head) and two grandchildren of Maria's; George Jolly aged 13, an agricultural labourer and Ellen Jolly aged 9, both born at Barrow. 

Susannah's children were

George, baptised 4 May 1868 at Barrow.

Edgar, baptised 24 March 1871 at Barrow and buried 18 August 1880 at Barrow.

Ellen, born about 1871 at Barrow.

Ellen, baptised 4 February 1850 at Barrow.  In 1851 at Barrow she was aged 1.  She was buried at Barrow, 28 November 1868.
