The Family of Charlotte Holmes, late Hammond formerly Jolly (1800 – 1873) of Barrow and Flempton

Charlotte Jolly was baptised at Barrow, 30 November 1800.  , a daughter of Jeremiah Jolly (labourer) and Mary formerly Fordham.

She, of Barrow, married James Hammond, of Cavenham (transcript Caversham, sic, but there is no parish of this name in Suffolk), 13 June 1822 at Barrow.

 

James Hammond was buried at Flempton cum Hengrave, 30 September 1832 aged 32.

 

Charlotte Hammond, widow, married secondly John Holmes widower of Flempton, 1 December 1833 at Cavenham.

 

In 1841 at the Green, Flempton, John Holmes was aged 45, an agricultural labourer.  Charlotte was aged 40, Silvester 15, Barbary 14, Elizabeth 12, Thomas 6, George 4 and Henry 1.  All were born in the county.

 

In 1851 at Flempton, John was aged 60, an agricultural labourer born at Flempton.  Charlotte his wife was aged 50 and born at Barrow.  John’s children were John aged 30, Thomas aged 16, George aged 13, Henry aged 11, all agricultural labourers and William aged 9.  All the children were born at Flempton.

 

In 1861 at the Green, Flempton, John was aged 70 an agricultural labourer born at Flempton, his wife, Charlotte was aged 57 and born at Barrow, and their single children were Henry aged 21 and William aged 19 both agricultural labourers and born at Flempton.

 

John Holmes was buried at Flempton 18 June 1865 aged 74.

 

In 1871 at the Green Flempton, Charlotte was a widow aged 73, an agricultural labourer (‘s ?) widow born at Barrow and her children were Henry, a widower aged 31 and William married aged 29 both agricultural labourers and born at Flempton.  There were also daughter-in-law Eliza aged 23 and born at Fornham All Saints and grandchildren Matilda aged 3 and Harriett aged 3 months and born at Flempton.

 

Charlotte Holmes was buried at Flempton 5 October 1873 aged 72.

 

John and Charlotte’s children were:

Thomas Willliam Holmes, born about 1834 and baptised 15 February 1835, a son of John (labourer) and Charlotte.

George Holmes, born about 1837 and baptised at Flempton 23 June 1844, a son of John (labourer) and Charlotte, aged 7 years.

Henry Holmes, born about 1839 and baptised at Flempton 23 June 1844, a son of John (labourer) and Charlotte, aged 5 years.

William Holmes, born about 1841 and baptised at Flempton 23 June 1844, a son of John (labourer) and Charlotte, aged 3 years.  He married Eliza.  In 1871 he and his family were with his mother, Charlotte at Flempton. 

William and Eliza’s children were:

Matilda Holmes, born 5 October 1867 and baptised at Flempton 26 February 1871 a daughter of William (labourer) and Eliza.

Harriet Holmes, born 9 December 1870 and baptised at Flempton 26 February 1871 a daughter of William (labourer) and Eliza.
