The Family of William Sheffield Flack (1845 – 1917)

I am grateful to Denise Carr and Jim Flack, (www.flackgenealogy.co.uk) for some of the information on this page.

He was baptised 30 March 1845, at Linton, a son of James Flack or Gibson and Susan formerly Sheffield. In the GRO index for March 1845, Linton district, he is named as William Sheffield Flack)

In 1851 and 1861 he was at home aged 6 and 16 (kitchen boy).

William Flack married Sarah Ann Bond in the September quarter 1868 in the Chelsea district.

On 13 August 1869 (birth certificate of George W.G. Flack) William and Sarah were living at 111, Abbey Street.

In the 1871 census of 3 Church Grove, St John, London was William S. Flack, aged 26, labourer at brewery, born at Linton.  His wife was Sarah.  Their son, George W.G. Flack, was aged 1 and born in Bermondsey.

In the 1881 census he was found at 3 Church Grove, Southwark, St John Horsleydown, as William Hack, aged 37, a brewer’s labourer, born at Linton.  His wife was Sarah A., aged 37 and born at Lynn, Norfolk.  Their children were George W. (11, born Bermondsey, Surrey), Florence (9, born Horsleydown, Surrey) and Jeffry (1, born Horsleydown, Surrey).  With them was Herbert Bond aged 24, a railway clerk, born at Lynn, Norfolk.  He is related to William as ‘other’ but could this have been mistranscribed for ‘brother’?  There is a GRO birth entry of a Sarah Ann Bond in the Kings Lynn district in the December 1843 quarter.  The marriage of Sarah Ann Bond and William Flack was on 9 August 1868 at Chelsea St Luke, Middlesex.

In 1891, at 84 Coxon Place, Horsleydown, London, William was aged 46, a brewers labourer, born at Linton.  This was confirmed from the 1891 census image for Bennett, where, at the top of the page is Frederick H. Flack aged 6 and born at Horsleydown.

In 1901 William is again indexed under Hack, but the original image shows that it is clearly Flack.  This is seen when the ‘H’ of ‘Hack’ is compared with the ‘H’ of Harper on the same image page – they are obviously different!  William is at 448 Hanover Buildings, St John Horsleydown, Bermondsey, living in 3 rooms.  He is aged 57, a brewer’s labourer, born at Linton, Cambs.  His wife, Sarah A. is aged 57 and born at Kings Lynn, Norfolk.  Their children are Florence G. (single, aged 29, a shop assistant born Horsleydown), Jeffery (single, aged 21, a commercial clerk, born Horsleydown) and Frank (?) E. (son, aged 16, a commercial clerk, born Horsleydown).

In 1911 (index) in ‘London’, William Flack was aged 65 and born in Linton.  He was a late brewer’s labourer, pensioned off.

William Flack’s death was most probably registered in the St Olave district (includes Horsleydown) in the March quarter 1917 aged 71.

William and Sarah A.’s children were

George William Gibson Flack, born 13 August 1869 at 111 Abbey Street, Bermondsey, Surrey.  Father William was a brewer's labourer and mother, Sarah formerly Bond.

Florence Gibson Flack, born 1871/2 at Horsleydown, Surrey

Jeffery Flack, born 1879/80 at Horsleydown, Surrey

Fredrick Edward Flack, born 1884/5 at Horsleydown
