The Family of Emma Ellis, formerly Flack (1847 – 1929) of Linton and Foxton

I am grateful to Denise Carr and Jim Flack, (www.flackgenealogy.co.uk) for some of the information on this page.

Emma Flack was baptised 25 July 1847, at Linton, a daughter of James Flack or Gibson and Susan formerly Sheffield.

In 1851 she was at home aged 3.

The website www.flackgenealogy.co.uk agrees with the marriage to Charles Ellis and gives the date of marriage as 1869, at Linton.  The GRO index has the Linton district for Emma Flack and Charles Ellis.

In 1871, at Camping Close, Linton, Emma was aged 23 and born at Linton.  Her husband, Charles, was aged 29, an agricultural labourer and born at Abington.  Their son, George W. was aged 7 months and born at Linton.

In 1881 there is, at Foxton, an Emma Ellis, aged 34 and born at Linton.  Her husband was Charles, an agricultural labourer, aged 39 and born at Little Abington.  Their children were George W. (11, born at Linton), Fred W. (daur!, 7, born at Foxton), Sidney J. (3, born at Foxton) and Bertie Edwin (1, born at Foxton).  Bennett married Elizabeth Rayner of Foxton in 1874, so perhaps Bennett met her through his sister.

In 1901 the family was still living at High Street, Foxton.  Charles Ellis was aged 63, a horsekeeper on a farm (worker), born at Little Abington.  Emma, his wife was aged 54 and born at Linton.  Their children were Fred W. (son, 27, born Foxton, cement labourer), Sidney J. (24?, born Foxton, farm labourer), Bertie E. (20, born Foxton, brickmaker), Alfred (18, born Foxton, brickmaker) and Hubert H. (9, born Foxton).

In 1911 at Foxton in 4 rooms, Emma Ellis was aged 63 and born at Linton.  She was a charwoman domestic and cleans the schools.  She had been married for 42 years and had had five children (!) none of whom had died.  Charles was aged 70 and a retired farm labourer born at Abbington.  Their single sons were Frederick William aged 36 a farm labourer born at Foxton and Hubert Harvey aged 19, an unemployed farm labourer and born at Foxton.

Emma Ellis’s death was registered in the Royston district (includes Foxton) in the March quarter 1929.  She was aged 81.

Emma and Charles’ children were:

George W. Ellis, born autumn 1870 at Linton.  In 1871 he was at home with his parents aged 7 months.

Frederick William Ellis, born 1872/3 Foxton
