The Family of William Ellerbeck (1795 – 1870) of Tadcaster and Tickhill

William Ellerbeck was born 29 January 1795 and baptised 15 July 1795 at Tadcaster, a son of Thomas Ellerbeck of Tadcaster, shoemaker, son of Richard Ellerbeck of Toldston (sic) in the parish of Newton Kyme, farmer and Elizabeth, daughter of Ralph Dalton of York, cordwainer, by Ann, daughter of – Blackburn of Church Garforth, collier5.    This is the only baptism of William Ellerbeck at Tadcaster 1790 – 1800.

He, of the parish of Maltby, married Elizabeth Hall of Tickhill 30 April 1821 at Tickhill.  The witnesses were George Halkin and Elizabeth Dowson.  This is verified because William, in 1861 was a groom and born at Tadcaster.  In 1851, Elizabeth of Tickhill was a grooms wife, and in 1841 an elderly Ann Hall was with them.

In 1841, at Westgate, Tickhill, William was aged 45, an agricultural labourer, Elizabeth was 40, Ann was 20, Thomas was 15, John was 12, Elizabeth was 10 and Mary was 8.  Also with them was Ann Hall aged 60, a widow and labourer.  All were born in the county.

In 1851, William has not been found but at Westgate, Tickhill, Elizabeth was aged 50, married and a groom’s wife.  With her were three daughters, Mary aged 17 and single, Elizabeth Piercy married aged 20 and Ann Nutt married aged aged 29, all born at Tickhill.  With Elizabeth was her granddaughter, Mary Nutt aged 5 months and born at Blythe, Notts.

In 1861 at Sandbeck Hall, Maltby, William Ellerbeck was a servant aged 66, married and a groom born at Tadcaster.  There were no other family members with him.  At Westgate, Tickhill, in a separate building, there is no head of the household or father/mother and three inhabitants: Mary Ellerbeck, described as daughter aged 26, grandson John Piercy aged 9 and granddaughter Alice Piercey aged 1.  It is very probable that Elizabeth was at home but not recorded by the writer of the enumeration schedule.
