The Family of Richard Ellerbeck (1690 – 1765) of Little Ouseburn and Newton cum Toulston

Richard Ellerbeck was baptised 26 May 1690 at Little Ouseburn, Yorkshire.  His parents were Richard Ellerbeck and Sarah Wrightson.

He married Catherine Daniell 29 June 1715 at Newton Kyme.  She had previously been married to John Scarre 14 December 1710 at Newton Kyme, who was buried in 1714 at Newton Kyme.  John Scarre’s probate of 1715 is in the index of the Exchequer and Prerogative Courts of York.

In the London Gazette for 28 May and 2 August 1748 is recorded ‘Richard Ellerbeck of Newton Kime Yeoman, an insolvent debtor (presumably held) at York Castle’.  He could be this Richard or his son, though on balance, it is more likely to be this Richard.  An interesting coincidence of date is that the marriage of Richard Ellerbeck Jnr to Jane Ellis occurred in York Minster on 17 June 1748!  Richard Jnr seems to have settled first at East Keswick (baptism of their first child, Catherine) before coming to Newton Kyme.

He was buried 9 October 1765 at Newton Kyme, Yorks.  His son, Richard, is recorded as junior in the baptism records of his children, to 1763, so this burial is almost certainly that of Richard senior, even though no age was recorded.
