The Family of Jane Varlow formerly Ellerbeck (1792 – 1879)

Jane Ellerbeck was born 30 July 1792 and baptised 25 October 1792 at Tadcaster, a daughter of Thomas Ellerbeck of Tadcaster, shoemaker, son of Richard Ellerbeck of Toldston (sic) in the parish of Newton Kyme, farmer, and Elizabeth, daughter of Ralph Dalton of York, cordwainer, by Ann, daughter of – Blackburn of Church Garforth, collier.

 

She married William Varlow 16 March 1817 at Tadcaster.

 

In 1841 , at Wighill Lane, Tadcaster East, Jane Varlow was aged 50 and independent, with Thomas aged 14 and John aged 12, all born in the county.

 

In 1851, at Wighill Road, Tadcaster East, Jane Varley was a widow aged 59, a charwoman.  Her two sons were Thomas aged 24 and John aged 22 both agricultural labourers and all were born in Tadcaster.

 

In 1861 at Bridge Street, Tadcaster, Jane Varley was a widow and nurse aged 70 and born in Tadcaster in the household of Catherine Nottage.

 

In 1871 at 31 Wighill Land, Tadcaster East, Jane Varlow was head and a widow aged 80, receiving parish allowance and born in Tadcaster.

 

Jane Varlow’s death was registered in the York district in the September quarter 1879, aged 89.

 

Jane and William’s children were:

Richard Varlow, baptised 12 November 1817 at Tadcaster.

Mary Ann Varlow, baptised 4 September 1821 at Tadcaster.

Elizabeth Varlow, baptised 24 March 1825 at Tadcaster.

William Varlow, baptised 11 August 1825 at Tadcaster.

Thomas Varlow, baptised 14 March 1828 at Tadcaster.

In 1861, next to his brother John, at private House, Gringhouses, Holy Trinity, York, Thomas was aged 34 a brick maker and born at Tadcaster.  His wife, Sarah, wa aged 27 and born at North Allerton.  Their children were Robert aged 2 born at Tadcaster and Jane Ann aged 3 months and born at Dringhouses.

In 1871, at 4 Boot and Shoe Yard, Tadcaster East, Thomas was aged 44 an agricultural labourer born at Tadcaster.  His wife, Sarah was aged 37 and born at North Allerton.  Their children were Robert aged 12 born in Tadcaster, Jane A aged 10 born at Dringhouses, Mary aged 8 born at York, William H aged 3 born at tadcaster and Thomas aged 11 months and born at Tadcaster.

In 1881 (Transcript), living in 9 Regents Square, St Maurice in the Suburbs, York, Thomas Varlow was aged 54, a general labourer born in Tadcaster.  His wife, Sarah, was aged 47 and born in Yorkshire.  Their children were Jane A. aged 20, a housemaid born in Dringhouses, Mary aged 18 a housemaid born in York, William H. aged 13 born in Tadcaster, Thomas S. aged 8 born in York and George A. aged 3 born in York.  There was also a boarder, Joseph Livermore aged 45 and a married groom (birth place blank).  Thomas and Sarah’s children were:

Mary Varlow, born about 1862 at York.

William H. Varlow, born about 1867 at Tadcaster

John Varlow, baptised 14 December 1828 at Tadcaster.  In 1861, next to his brother Thomas, at Private House, Dringhouses, Holy Trinity, York, he was aged 32 a brick maker born in Tadcaster.  His wife, Fanny, was aged 32 and born at Craike and their child was William aged 4 and born at Tadcaster.  John and Fanny’s children were:

William Varlow, born about 1856 at Tadcaster.
