The Family of Elizabeth Atkinson formerly Ellerbeck (1843 – 1914) of Tadcaster

Elizabeth Ellerbeck was born about 1843 in Tadcaster and her birth was registered in the Tadcaster district in the September quarter 1843.  She was a daughter of John Ellerbeck and Mary formerly Killingbeck.

In the census of 1851, at New Street, she was at home with her parents, aged 7 and born in Tadcaster.

In the census of 1871, at High Street, Tadcaster West, living with her mother, Elizabeth was unmarried, aged 27, a general servant and born in Tadcaster.  There was also a grandson, John, aged 3 and born in Tadcaster.  He seems to be Elizabeth's son.

In the June quarter 1871, in the Tadcaster district, Elizabeth married George Atkinson.

In 1881, in New Street, Tadcaster, Elizabeth was aged 37.  Her husband, George, was aged 37, an engine man at Smith’s Brewery.  Their children were John Ellerbeck, stepson to George, aged 13, Annie Atkinson aged 8, Richard Atkinson aged 4 and William Atkinson aged 1.  All were born at Tadcaster.

George Atkinson’s death was registered in the March quarter 1891 in the Tadcaster district, aged 47.

In 1891, at Lady Pits (next to the Fox and Hounds Inn), West Tadcaster, Elizabeth Atkinson was a widow aged 47, a housekeeper.  Her children were Richard aged 14, a stable boy (worker), William aged 11, Henry aged 9 and George aged 8.  All were born in Tadcaster.  There were two boarders, Reginald H. Pearson aged 10 and Sidney W. Pearson aged 8 both born in Walton.

In 1901, at Lady Pits, Leeds Road, West Tadcaster, Elizabeth was a widow aged 56 and her children were William aged 21 a brewer’s labourer, Henry aged 19 a painter’s apprentice, George aged 14 an engineer’s labourer and Annie Webster, married aged 28.  All were born in Tadcaster.  There was also a grandchild, Dick Webster aged 3 and born in Bradford.

In 1911, in four rooms at Leeds Road, West Tadcaster, Elizabeth was a widow aged 68.  She had been married 44 years (not so!) and had had six children none of whom had died.  She was a charwoman.  With her was her son George single and aged 25, a cellar potman.  Both were born in Tadcaster.

Elizabeth Atkinson’s death is probably registered in the March quarter 1914 in the Tadcaster district, aged 70.

Elizabeth’s child was:
