He was born 7 August 1875 at 37 Maltravers Road Sheffield (the son of William West, Engine Turner), a child of William West and Elizabeth formerly Baines (she later married George Johnson).
In 1881 he was at home with his parents, at Prospect Place, Normanton, aged 5 and born at Sheffield.
In 1891, he was living with his mother at 25 Newcastle Street, Hucknall under Huthwaite, Sutton in Ashfield, Notts, aged 15, a colliery banksman, born in Sheffield.
In 1901 he was living (as Albert West) with his mother at Darley Bank, St Thomas, Rotherham, single, aged 25, a coal trammer.
In 1911, in 4 rooms at 51 Hartington Road (next to Regent Street, off Ferham Road), Albert West was aged 36, a coal miner born in Sheffield. With him was his wife, Grace, aged 27, born in Rotherham. Grace had been married for 5 years and had had three children who were all living. With Albert were children Lilly Cupit aged 7 and Gwendoline West aged 5 both born in Rotherham and William West aged 1 born at Treetown [Treeton]. There was also a boarder, John Cupitt aged 29 and single, a cold roller at a steel works and born in Rotherham. John Cupitt looks like Grace’s brother. In Freebmd there is no entry for Grace Cupit(t) but there is an Elizabeth Grace Cupit, birth registered in the December quarter 1881 in the Rotherham district. She was a probable daughter of Joseph and Margaret Cupit, who, in 1881 were living at 1 Court Masborough Street, Kimberworth with a number of children, including John aged 1 year, born at Masborough.
In the 1939 register Albert West, a steelworks labourer, was born 7 August 1875 with Grace West, date of birth 5 November 1882 (sic), unpaid domestic duties and George West date of birth 25 August 1921, a bottle maker, all living at 13 Findlay Road, Rotherham CB.
The GRO marriage indexes have been searched for a marriage, 1901-1910 inc., but the only likely ones were for Albert at Mansfield in the June quarter of 1909 and for Albert Edward at Nottingham in the June quarter of 1910. Interestingly there is a marriage of an Albert E. West to an Elizabeth G. Cupitt in the December quarter 1939 in the registration district of Rotherham (Free BMD searched 1900 – 1980).
There is a suitable death entry for an Albert E. West in the March quarter 1946 in the Rotherham district. He was aged 70.
There is a suitable death entry for Elizabeth G. West in the Rotherham district in the March quarter 1961. She was aged 79.
The children of Albert and Grace (is Lilly, registered as Lily Cupitt, in the Rotherham district in the June quarter 1904, one of them?) appear to be:
Gwendoline West, birth registered in the March quarter 1907, in the Rotherham district. There is a marriage of a Gwendoline West to a George Bath in the Rotherham district in the June quarter 1930.
William West, birth registered in the December quarter 1910, in the Rotherham district (includes Treeton).
George Edward West (1921 – 1986), birth registered in the December quarter 1921 in the
Rotherham district (maiden name Cupitt). In 1939 he was with Albert and Grace with a
date of birth 25 August 1921, a bottle maker.
His death was registered in the June quarter 1986 in the Rotherham
district with a date of birth of 25 August 1921.
