He was baptised 18 June 1807 at Brayton, Yorks, a son of Joseph Vollans and Elizabeth (formerly Hesselgrave).
He married Mary Harriman 28 September 1833 at Escrick, witnesses Charles Harriman and Thomas Wilkinson.

1871 Census: 43 (63?) Labourer in Ryther
with Mary 62.
In 1881 at Ryther cum Ossendyke, he was aged 73, a general labourer, born at Hambleton, Yorks (not a parish, and probably in the parish of Brayton). His wife, Mary, was aged 72 and born at Escrick, Yorks. With them was their grandchild, Emma M. Hallas, aged 8 and born at Ryther.
He died in 1881 (registered in the June quarter 1881 in the Tadcaster district aged 74).

Mary, born 1834, (baptised September 1836 at Cawood) and died 1837.
Eliza, born 1838 and died 1848. (or Elizabeth, baptised 5 August 1838 at Cawood)
Elizabeth, born 1842 (baptised 27 September 1842 at Ryther). She married George Varey.
Charles, born 1844 (baptised 27 October 1844 at Ryther. He married Hannah Fletcher (registered in the September quarter 1864 in the Selby district). He died 1911. Charles and Hannah's children were

John Thomas,
born 1867. He married Annie Adamson. He died 1926.
William Henry, born 1876 and died 1956.

born 1885. She married Thomas Mills.
Thomas, born 1847 (baptised 10 January 1847 at Ryther).
In the census of 1881, as Thomas Vollans, he was aged 34, an unmarried farm servant in the household of Francis Gilbertson, at Ryther cum Ossendyke, Yorks. Thomas gave his birthplace as Ryther. He died 1900.
Eliza, born 1849 (baptised 9 August 1849 at Ryther). She married James Hallas in the December quarter 1872 in the Wakefield district).
