I am very grateful to ‘Cloghopper’ for information in his account of the Thwaites of Abbotside.
He was baptised 12 October 1777 at Hardrow (son of Simon of Shaw).
He, of Thoralby, married, not at Hardrow, but at Aysgarth, the mother church of the parish, 4 November 1806, to Anne Fawcett, spinster.
He was first at Cotebottom, Bishopdale and later moved to a larger farm Howesyke, in the valley bottom of Bishopdale and where his second son, John, succeeded him, to be followed by his son, James.
Richard retired to Thoralby and died there 18 May 1860. Probate of his will was granted 18 December 1860 at York to Simon Thwaite of Street Head, innkeeper, and Richard Thwaite of Longridge, farmer, both in the parish of Aysgarth, the sons and executors. He was of Thoralby in the parish of Aysgarth, a yeoman and his estate was under £600.
Richard and Anne’s children were:
Simon Thwaite (1806 – 1899), baptised 4 November 1806 at Aysgarth (of Cotebottom). He died 13 May 1899 and probate was granted 5 October 1899 at London to Richard Thwaite, farmer and William Hunter Tomlinson, esquire. Simon was of Street Head, Bishopdale, Aysgarth, yeoman and innkeeper and his effects were £1,701.7s.7d.
