The Family of Mary Gandy formerly Skelton

Mary was baptised 9 February 1812 at Mattersey, Notts. a daughter of John Skelton and Mary (formerly Downing).

Mary married William Gandy in the December quarter 1838 in the E. Retford district.

In 1841, in Eyre Street, Sheffield, William Gandy was aged 30 a gilder, Mary was aged 29, John was aged 0(?) months and Emma Gandy was aged 20, a dressmaker. Only John was born in the county.

William Gandy was buried at East Retford 21 December 1845.  No age was given and he was of Carolgate.

In 1851, at Castlegate, East Retford, Notts., Mary was a widow, aged 40, a confectioner and born at Lound, Notts. With her were her sons William aged 10 born at Sheffield, and Henry aged 5 born at East Retford. There were also William Kirton, brother-in-law aged 22 (!) a gardener born at Clarborough, Notts., and Jane Kirton, sister aged 28 and born at Mattersea, Notts.

Mary Gandy was buried at East Retford, 30 April 1851.  Although no age was given she was of Carolgate.

William and Mary's children were

  1. John William, born about 1841 in Sheffield. In 1841, as John, he was with his parents. In 1851, as William, he was at home with his mother. In 1861, in Brightside Bierlow, John W. Gandy was aged 20, born in Sheffield and lodging in the household of Thomas E. Castleton aged 35. In 1871, in Sculcotes, living on his own, was John W. Gandy, aged 30, born in Sheffield. He married Mary Jane Asbery (his first cousin) in the September quarter of 1871, in the Sculcoates district.  John William Gandy’s death appears to have been registered in the June quarter 1910 in the Hull district.  He was aged 69. 
  2. Henry, born about 1845 in East Retford. In 1861, at Eccleshall Bierlow, Henry Gandy was aged 15, an apprentice, born at Retford, in the household of Samuel Winterbottom aged 60 and his family.
