His burial indicates a birth year of 1743. There are at least two possible baptisms for John Downing: 17 September 1746 at Sheffield, son of John Downing carpenter and 23 April 1743 at Darfield, son of John Downing of Ardsley (near Burnley).
He (John Downend of Wickersley) married Comfort Owin of the parish at Treeton 23 November 1777 after banns, who was a daughter of Benjamin Owen, of Treaton, labourer.
Comfort Downing of Wickersley was buried at Wickersley 19 January 1817 aged 72 (giving a birth year of 1745).
John Downing of Wickersley was buried at Wickersley, 23 April 1818 aged 74 (giving a birth year of 1744).
