The Family of Sarah Sparrow formerly Challis (1792 – 1866) of Depden

Sarah Challis was born 25 September 1792 at the house of Sarah Challis at Depden, a child of Lydia Challis, and was baptised 7 July 1793 at Depden.

An order was made by the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of Depden, dated 25 October 1792 against James Nunn, of Hawstead, for the maintenance of Lydia and Sarah.

According to the baptism register of Depden, it seems that Sarah had an illegitimate daughter, Hannah Sparrow Challis, in 1811.

Sarah (X) was married to Samuel Sparrow at Depden, 18 November 1813, after banns.  They were bachelor and spinster, both of Depden and the witnesses were Rhoda H. Sparrow and John Clarke.

In the 1841 census of Robinson Farm, Depden, Sarah was aged 50 and was living with Samuel Sparrow (60, an agricultural labourer), William (15), Jane (12), Thomas (7) and Ann (4).  With them was Liddy Challis aged 74, and all were born in Suffolk.  There were no other Samuel Sparrows in Depden in 1841.

Samuel Sparrow was buried at Depden 19 May 1849 aged 68.

In the 1851 census of Depden, Sarah was a widow, aged 59, a pauper, formerly an agricultural labourer’s wife.  Her children were James, unmarried, 19, a groom, Thomas, unmarried, 17, an agricultural labourer and Ann, 14, a scholar.  With them was Sarah’s mother, Lydia Challis.  All were born at Depden.

In 1861 at Robinson Farm, Depden, Sarah was head and on her own.  She was a widow aged 70 and a field labourer born at Depden.

Sarah was probably buried at Depden 23 September 1866 age not known.  There is a death registered in the Thingoe district (includes Depden) in the September quarter 1866 for a Sarah Sparrow aged 75.

Sarah’s child was

Hannah Sparrow Challis, born 16 November 1811 and baptised at Depden 1 December 1811.  Perhaps Sarah married her daughter’s father.
