The Family of John Pettit (1889 – 1949) of Depden and Newmarket

John Pettit was born 1 August 1889 (registered September quarter 1889, Thingoe district, 4a 678) and baptised 15 September 1889 at Depden (father, of Depden, farmer), a son of Ernest Albert Pettit and Annie formerly Challis.   

 

In 1911 he was living with his parents, single, aged 21 and born at Depden.

 

He served in the Suffolk Regiment in World War 1 and Sidney Cutter, who married Florence Kate, was a friend of his in the same regiment. 

 

He married Lizzie King in the June quarter of 1918 , in the Newmarket district. 

 

He lived at Railway Cottages, Newmarket and later at 6 Park Cottages Green Road, Newmarket. 

 

In 1939 (register) John Pettitt was living at 6 Parkside Cottages, Park Square, Newmarket UD (close to Green Road) with Elizabeth (Lizzie) Pettitt (date of birth 6 May 1890), a coal hawker (heavy worker) and with a date of birth of 1 August 1889.  There was one other whose record is closed.

 

He was a railway employee and worked at Warren Hill station.  He died on 19 May 1948 (death entry, as John Pettitt, in the GRO index of June quarter 1948, Newmarket 4b 819), aged 58, of cancer, and was buried in Newmarket Cemetery.  Lizzie died 19 April 1983.

 

One of John and Lizzie’s children was:

George Albert Pettit (1920 – 1994), born 11 August 1920 (registered Newmarket district in the September quarter 1920 as George A. Pettitt, King, 3b 918).  He joined the RAF.  He was a valet to a family in Newmarket and then joined the railways and became stationmaster at Newmarket.  He was colour-blind.  He died 20 April 1994.
