Ethel Eliza Pettit was born 12 December 1890 (registered March quarter 1891, Thingoe district, 4a 748) and baptised 6 March 1891 at Depden, (father of Depden, farmer)., a daughter of Ernest Albert Pettit and Annie formerly Challis.
She married Sidney Williams (who was a stable worker) in the March quarter 1910 in the Risbridge registration district, which includes Cowlinge, (4a 1223, cross checked under both names).
They lived at Dullingham, and later at Victoria Cottages, Exning (in his later life, Sidney Williams would turn up at the home of Dorothy May Ollington, thinking he lived there).
In 1911 the Williams were servants in the household of a corn merchant, John Jennings, at Beechcroft House, Park Lane, Newmarket. Sidney was aged 25 a stableman born at Lambourn, Berks, Ettie Eliza was aged 20 and born at Debden Green, Bury St Edmonds and Ena May was aged 1 and born at St Marys, Newmarket. Ettie and Sidney had been married for 1 year and 1 month and had had one child.
In 1939 (register), at Old Park Lodge, Ashridge Park, Berkhampstead, next to the club house, in the household of James H (secretary of Ashridge Golf Club) and Evelyn Richardson, Sidney Williams was a green keeper and gardener with a birth date of 12 July 1887 and Ethel E. had a birth date of 12 December 1891 (sic), a domestic servant.
Her death was registered in the December quarter 1974 in the Newmarket district with a date of birth of 12 December 1890.
They had a daughter,
Ena May Williams (1910 – 1992), birth registered in the September quarter 1910 in the Newmarket district. In 1911 she was with her parents. She married Cecil J. Scannell in the September quarter 1931 in the Newmarket district. In the 1939 register Ena and Cecil were living at 3 Stretton Avenue, Newmarket. Her date of birth was 28 July 1910 and Cecil’s was 29 March 1906, corrected to 03, and he was a groom racing stables. There was one other whose record is closed. Ena May Scannell’s death was registered in the Bury St Edunds district in the March quarter 1992 with a date of birth 28 July 1910.
