The Family of Mabel Sarah Cockerton formerly Pettit (1896 – 1977)

I am very grateful to Joan Reed for much of the information on this page.

She was born 24 March 1896, at Hargrave, a daughter of Ernest Albert Pettit (farmer) and Annie formerly Challis.

She married Frank Edward (Ted) Cockerton, a stud groom, (born 22 November 1891 at Gazeley, Suffolk) on 8 September 1915, at St Mary’s Newmarket.  She was aged 20, a domestic servant, living in the parish of St Mary’s Newmarket.  Her father Ernest Albert is described as a stockman.  The witnesses were Ernest Albert Pettit and Gladys Williams.

At first they lived in a thatched cottage in Stetchworth High Street until January 1957 when the cottage was condemned.

In 1939 (register) Mabel S Cockerton was living in High Street, Stetchworth with Frank E Cockerton (date of birth 22 November 1891, a farm labourer) and with an exact date of birth.  There were two others whose records are closed.

She was housed further up the High Street in converted almshouses (top floor maisonette) and later, when she could no longer manage the stairs, moved (1965) to 7, Coopers Close, (at Stetchworth).

Frank Edward died 2 July 1942 at Addenbrooke Hospital, Cambridge.

Mabel Sarah died on 17 July 1977, at 7 Coopers Close, Stetchworth from myocardial infarction (Ia) and systemic arterial hypertension (Ib), and treated hypothyroidism (typed on the certificate as hypothycordisiu) and osteoarthritis (II).

Three of Mabel Sarah and Frank Edward Cockerton’s children were:

Nellie Annie Cockerton (1917 – 2010) (known as Sissie).  She was born 25 October 1917 and married Harold George John Scrivens (born 3 December 1920 and died 26 October 1992 London) on 12 September 1943.  Sissie died 5 December 2010.
