The Family of John Lumkyn ( - 1627) of Dullingham

I am very grateful to Colin Hatton and Hedley Martin for the information on this page.

John Lumkyn married Agnes Beard, 29 November 1578 at Dullingham (the Dullingham registers begin in 1558).

Agnes was buried 22 September 1609 at Dullingham.

John married secondly Joan Smith, 6 October 1610 at Dullingham.

Joan was buried 18 June 1619 at Dullingham.

John married thirdly Joan Crike, 29 May 1621 at Dullingham.

John was buried 5 July 1627 at Dullingham.

His will (VC 26:425 1627 CW) was dated 18 April 1626.  He was of Dullingham, a yeoman.  His executor was to decide where his body was to be buried.  To his wife Joan, he left the tenement and close at Dullingham Ley where she was not to cut down trees without son William's permission.  After her death the tenement was to go to William.  Joan was also to have 40 shillings, 2 bullocks, a swine hog and the going of two cows in the pasture, rented from the town with John Tylbrooke until Hallowmass [1 November] 1628.  While she was a widow, Joan was to remain in the house where he lived until Hallowmas 1628, sharing everything with son William, including the corn in the store.  Joan was also left a number of stated articles in the hall, and chamber and also the table, frame and form in the buttery which were to go to John, the son of Thomas Leader after her death.  She was to have some tubs, barrels, and milk vessels and, for every year she was a widow, some rye, barley and bullimonge [a mixture of oats and barley].  He mentioned his wife's sister, Mary who was to collect some bed linen she had left with him.  His daughter, Prudence was given 10 pounds in three equal portions, in three years, provided she continued with the sale of land to William Cornells from her husband lately deceased; and some bed linen and other domestic items.  John Leader was to have 5 pounds and some bedding when he was 21, kept until then by William.  His other Leader grandchildren were beneficiaries also: Anne, to receive 20 s on the day of her marriage or at 21 and Thomas and Henry 5 s each.  William's wife, Margaret was left 20s and their children 10s apiece.  William Lumkin and John Leader were left the house at ..onny Bridge and three acres of land, to fulfil the wishes of the late William Leader.  The poor of Dullingham were left 5s.  He left William Westley 5s.  William (appointed executor) was to have the house he then dwelt in, and its lands, provided he proved the will (or Prudence has it!).  The witnesses were William Smith and William Rayment.  Probate was granted in July 1627.

Joan married William Ryland in 1637.

John and Agnes’s children were:

1.      Prudence Lumkyn (1584 - ), baptised 24 December 1584.  She married Thomas Leader, 3 October 1605 at Dullingham, Cambs.

2.      William Lumkyn.  He was mentioned in his father's will of 1626.  He married Margaret (mentioned in her father-in-law's will of 1626).
