The Family of Esther Gill formerly Kerton (1750 – 1799) of Kirkby Malzeard

Esther Kerton was baptised 5 October 1750 at Kirkby Malzeard (Kirton, daughter of Philip, of Winksley Bank).

She married John Gill 12 February 1770 at Kirkby Malzeard, after banns.  They were bachelor and spinster of the parish and the witnesses were George Thirkell and James Gill.

The burial of Esther Gill was probably 6 October 1799 at Kirkby Malzeard (wife of John of Galwhey).  There is another Esther Gill widow of Kirkby (poor) buried at Kirkby Malzeard 7 June 1785 but this seems less likely.

The burial of John was probably 13 June 1826 at Kirkby Malzeard.  He was of Galphay and aged 80 (giving a birth year of about 1746, which is suitable for a marriage in 1770).

There are many children of ‘John Gill’ that are baptised at Kirkby Malzeard.  John Gill (mason) was married to Sarah Wood at Kirkby Malzeard 23 May 1763.  John Gill (mason) was married to Mary Sadler at Kirkby Malzeard 26 November 1770 and John Gill (mason) was married to Ellen Bland at Kirkby Malzeard 5 November 1796.  The baptisms of Joanna daughter of John Gill of Kirkby in 1763 and of Isabella daughter of John Gill of Belford/Birlforth (Darrowgill) in 1766 suggest that these Johns did not marry Esther Kerton.  John Gill of Darrowgill was probably buried 1774 and there is a burial of John Gill, mason, of Kirkby in 1804.  As Esther’s parents were living at Galwhey, the baptisms of children of John Gill of Galwhey would seem to be those of John and Esther.  Accordingly the following list may be of their children:

John Gill, baptised 17 September 1770 at Kirkby Malzeard (son of John of Galwhey).  He probably married Hannah around 1798 (see below).  Hannah may have been buried 26 August 1821 at Kirkby Malzeard (aged 43 of Galphay), though this does not agree with the baptisms of George and Sarah below.

John and Hannah’s children may have been:

Jane Gill, baptised 9 February 1798 and 28 May 1798, both at Kirkby Malzeard (daughter of John jnr of Galwhey).  These may be ‘private’ and ‘public’ baptisms, but John of Kirkby also had a son John in 1771, so there may be two John jnrs!

Hannah Gill (1799 – 1800), baptised 7 July 1799 at Kirkby Malzeard (daughter of John of Galwhey, - but is this senior or junior?  She is included here as John jnr’s wife was probably Hannah).  She was buried 26 February 1800 at Kirkby Malzeard (daughter of John  - jnr BT – of Galwhey).

Ann Gill, buried 10 December 1801 at Kirkby Malzeard (daughter of John jnr of Galwhey).

John Gill (1802 – 1802), baptised 29 April 1802 at Kirkby Malzeard (son of John jnr of Galwhey).  He was buried 2 May 1802 at Kirkby Malzeard (son of John jnr of Galwhey).

Elizabeth Gill (1803 – 1803), baptised 5 June 1803 at Kirkby Malzeard (daughter of John jnr of Galwhey).  She was buried 14 June 1803 at Kirkby Malzeard (daughter of John jnr of Galwhey).

Mary Gill (1806 – 1806), baptised 28 September 1806 at Kirkby Malzeard (daughter of John jnr of Galwhey).  She was buried 9 October 1806 at Kirkby Malzeard (daughter of John jnr of Galwhey).

Esther Gill (1807 – 1807), baptised 26 September 1807 at Kirkby Malzeard (daughter of John of Galwhey).  She was buried either 3 August 1807 or 22 September 1807 (two entries, daughters of John of Galwhey.  The BT has Jana for the first of these).  These three dates have been checked against the CD ROM but this may itself be in error.

Rebecca Gill, baptised 29 December 1811 at Kirkby Malzeard (daughter of John of Galwhey).

James Gill, baptised 1 May 1814 at Kirkby Malzeard (son of John, labourer, and Hannah of Galphy).

Margaret Gill, baptised 17 November 1817 at Kirkby Malzeard (daughter of John, labourer, and Hannah of Galphy).

Hannah Gill (1821 – 1821), baptised 26 August 1821 at Kirkby Malzeard (daughter of John, labourer, and Hannah of Galphay).  Her mother appears to have been buried on the same day.  Hannah, infant of Galphay, was buried 7 December 1821 at Kirkby Malzeard.

George Gill, baptised 18 May 1823 at Kirkby Malzeard (son of John, labourer, and Hannah of Galphay).

Sarah Gill (1824 – 1826), baptised 25 December 1824 at Kirkby Malzeard (daughter of John, labourer, and Hannah of Galphay).  She was buried 20 September 1826 at Kirkby Malzeard, aged 2 of Galphay.

Margaret Gill, baptised 3 March 1777 at Kirkby Malzeard (daughter of John of Galwhey).

Esther Gill (1780 – 1780), baptised 20 June 1780 at Kirkby Malzeard (daughter of John of Galwhey).  She was buried 30 June 1780 at Kirkby Malzeard (daughter of John of Galwhey).

Christopher Gill (1782 – 1784), baptised 10 April 1782 at Kirkby Malzeard (son of John of Galwhey).  He was buried 2 August 1784 at Kirkby Malzeard (son of John of Galwhey).

Ann Gill, baptised 23 December 1785 at Kirkby Malzeard (daughter of John of Galwhey).

Richard Gill, baptised 11 March 1790 at Kirkby Malzeard (son of John of Galwhey).

Robert Gill (1794 – 1796), baptised 20 May 1794 at Kirkby Malzeard (son of John of Galwhey).  He was buried 7 June 1796 at Kirkby Malzeard (son of John of Galwhey).

David Gill, baptised 29 January 1796 (son of John of Galwhey).
