He was born 27 January 1881 at Topcliffe Row, West Ardsley to George Johnson, coal miner and Elizabeth Johnson, late West, formerly Baines. His birth was registered 8 March 1881 by C. Shephard, present at the birth, of Topcliffe Row, West Ardsley. (C. Shephard has to be Caroline Hawksley, who married Nathan Shephard, and hence was the half-sister of George.)
In 1881 he was at home with his parents at Prospect Place, Normanton, aged 10 weeks and born at Ardsley.
In 1891, living at 25 Newcastle Street, Hucknall under Huthwaite, Sutton in Ashfield, Notts, he was with his mother, aged 10, born at Topcliffe, Yorks.
In 1901 he was living with his mother at Darley Bank, St Thomas, Rotherham, aged 20, a coal trammer, born at Ardsley.
In 1911, living in 6 rooms at 15 Ferham Park Avenue, Rotherham, he was single and aged 30, a stone blower (underground) at a colliery and born at West Ardsley. With him were his mother, Elizabeth and brother Ernest Harold.
He was a miner and married Lucy Bisby 23 November 1912 in Masbrough Parish Church, Rotherham. He was a bachelor and miner aged 31 and living at 26 King Street (not 15 Ferham Park Avenue) and George, his father, (deceased) was a miner. Lucy was a spinster aged 27 of 19 Albert Street, a daughter of William Bisby (deceased) a labourer. Both signed the register and the witnesses were Albert George Bisby and Florence May Goachen.
He lived at 15 Ferham Park Avenue (Jan 1909? – July 1915). He is listed at 15 Ferham Park Avenue, a miner, in the 1911 White's Directory of Sheffield and Rotherham. He was a Governor of Rotherham Hospital and was ‘a bit of a boxer’.
In 1939 he appeared in the register as Joseph E. with the exact date of birth and living at 15 Ferham Park Avenue, Rotherham CB, a mine worker dataler. With him were Lucy with a date of birth of 20 January 1885, Molly Smith (Downs) with a date of birth of 22 December 1914 and married and Joseph H Johnson with a date of birth of 10 April 1930, at school, and also with 2 whose records are closed.
Joseph died 13 July 1958 at 15 Ferham Park Avenue, Kimberworth. He was aged 77 and a colliery dataller (retired) – a dataller was a day wage labourer. He died of 1a myocardial failure, 1b senile arteriosclerosis, 2 bronchitis. The informant was G.W. Johnson, son of 32 Hill Crest Road, Rotherham.
Lucy’s death was registered in the March quarter 1970 with a date of birth of 20 January 1885. This is consistent with Lucy Bisby’s age at marriage and the birth registration of a Lucy Bisby in the March quarter 1885.
Joseph and Lucy’s children were:
George William Johnson (1913 – 1991), was baptised at St Thomas Kimberworth 13 March 1913, as George Edward. His birth was registered as George W., (mother’s maiden name was Bisby) in the March quarter 1913 in the registration district of Rotherham (9c 1549). He may have married Hilda Pearson in the Rotherham district in the September quarter 1938.
In the 1939 register George W Johnson was living at 109 Gibbing Greaves Road, Rotherham with a birth date of 7 February 1913, a motor bus driver (passenger) with Hilda birth date 29 August 1916. There was one other whose record is closed.
G.W. Johnson was the informant of Joseph’s death in 1958 and was living at 32 Hill Crest Road, Rotherham. His death, with a date of birth of 7 February 1913 was registered in the September quarter 1991 in the Rotherham district.
Molly Johnson (1914 – 1992), was baptised at St Thomas Kimberworth
28 January 1915. Her birth was
registered in the March quarter 1915 in the registration district of Rotherham
(9c 1570). Her mother’s maiden name was Bisby. In the 1939
register there was a Molly Downs with a birth date of 22 December 1914 and
married, in the household of Joseph and Lucy Johnson. Her surname became Smith. The death of Molly Smith with a birth date of
22 December 1914 was in the Rotherham district in the September quarter
1992. There is a marriage of Molly
Johnson to Fred Downs in the Stockport district in the September quarter
1938. There is a marriage of Molly Downs
to Charles H Smith in the Spilsby district in the
September quarter 1967.
Joseph Harold Johnson (1930 – 1986), birth registered (Joseph H.) in the June quarter 1930 in the Rotherham district (mother: Bisby). He was a runner. In 1939 his date of birth was 10 April 1930 and he was with his parents. The death of Joseph Harold Johnson with a date of birth 10 April 1930 was registered in the March quarter 1986 in the Rotherham district. He may have married Brenda South in the Rotherham district in the June quarter 1952. If so, Brenda Johnson (nee South) died in Rotherham General Hospital, after a short illness, 22 March 2014 aged 84. Her funeral was held at Rotherham Crematorium 1 April.
