She was born 3 December 1882 at 11 Prospect Terrace, Normanton, Yorks to George Johnson and Elizabeth late West formerly Baines. George registered the birth and gave his name as George Edward Johnson, a coal miner.
In the 1891 census, living at 25 Newcastle Street, Hucknall under Huthwaite, Sutton in Ashfield, Notts, she was with her mother, aged 8, born at Normanton, Yorks.
In 1901 she was living with her mother at Darley Bank, St Thomas, Rotherham, aged 18 and born at Normanton.
She married Albert Poole at the Register Office, Rotherham, on 23 November 1901. She was aged 18, a spinster of 50 Pembroke Street, Holmes, Rotherham, the daughter of George Johnson (deceased), a “deputy at colliery”. Albert was aged 22, a bachelor and coal miner of the same address, the son of George Poole (deceased) a blacksmith. The witnesses were Thomas A Wragg and Fred Sydney Butcher.
Albert Poole appears to have been a son of George and Sarah Poole. In 1881 the family was living at 16 Paradise Street Bradford. George was aged 33, a bolt maker, born at Preston, Lancs, and Sarah was aged 30 also born at Preston Lancs. Their children were John, 6 and Sarah A 4, both born at Normanton Yorks and Albert aged 2 and George aged 10 months, both born at Bradford. In 1901 they appeared to be living at Eccleshill, just north of Bradford. Sarah was 49, a charwoman born in Staffs, Albert was 22, a spinner in woollen mill, Clara was 17 a farmer (?) in worsted mill, George aged 14, a wool washer, all born Bradford, Alfred aged 11 and Willie aged 8 were born at Eccleshill.
In 1911, in 3 rooms at 104 Laurel Street, Leeds Road, Bradford, Caroline Poole was aged 29 and born in Normanton. She had been married for 10 years and had had 5 children of whom 1 had died. She was with Albert, her husband, aged 32, a stone sawyer, born at 35 Ireton Street, Bradford, and her children Agnes Edith aged 8, born at 72 Chapel Street, Eccleshill, George aged 6, born at 3 Kate Terrace, Hull, Alfred aged 4 born at 24 Midland Road, Rotherham and Clara aged 2, born at 68 Midland Road, Rotherham.
In 1939 (register) Caroline L. Poole was living at 76 Tennyson Place, Bradford CB with a birth date of 3 December 1880 (sic) and with Sarah J, date of birth 4 June 1914 a coil former for electric dynamo, Hilda M whose surname became Thomas, date of birth 2 April 1920 a worsted drawer and Frances D whose surname became Clapham, date of birth 26 September 1929 - this is not a daughter of Caroline as Frances’s birth entry gives her mother’s maiden surname as Long - and with 4 whose records are closed. Albert does not appear to be with her, and there was also Miriam Hoult a widow date of birth 13 April 1911, an electric engineering driller.
Albert Poole died 10 January 1944 and was buried 15 January 1944 aged 65, at Windhill Cemetery, Owlet Road, Shipley in the same grave as Clara E. Poole aged 10, Eveline Poole aged 3 weeks and Dora Poole aged 5 months. His age corresponds to a year of birth of 1879, indicated by his age on marriage. This suggests that the family moved to Bradford, where they remained. There is a death registered for a Caroline L. Poole, in the Bradford district in the quarter 1964. Her age is given as 87 which is rather too old however, indicating a birth year of 1877, rather than 1882.
