The Family of Abel Ellerbeck (1702 – 1778)

Abel Ellerbeck (Abol) was born and baptised 26 May 1702 at Little Ouseburn, a son of Richard Ellerbeck.

He married Mary Wighill, at Wighill 10 May 1726, daughter of R Wighill and M Stephenson.

Mary Ellerbeck, wife of Abel, was buried at Tadcaster 16 November 1760.

There is a burial in 1778 of Abel Ellerbeck of Tadcaster 3 son of Richard Ellerbeck of Smaws in this parish, farmer by... died 27 of April buried 29 of April in the churchyard aged 75, of fever.  It is not exactly clear whether Richard or Abel was of Smaws.  Richard died in 1740 and was apparently buried at Newton on Ouse.  Richard’s wife, Sarah was buried 1723 at Tadcaster so it seems that Smaws was where Richard and his wife Sarah were before he went to Newton on Ouse.

In 1841, John Brocklebank, farmer aged 45, and his family with 4 agricultural labourers and 2 servants was living at Smaws Hall, West Tadcaster.  On the opposite page, in this census, in Back Lane, are son, John, and two daughters, Elizabeth and Charlotte, of the deceased Thomas Ellerbeck cordwainer.
