The Family of George Diss (1832 – 1894)

I am very grateful to Andy Diss for most of the information on this page.

George Diss was baptised 6 May 1832 at Horseheath, a son of of Thomas Diss and Elizabeth formerly Halls.

 

In 1841 he was at home with his parents, aged 9, born in Cambridgeshire.

 

In 1851 he was at home with his mother, unmarried, an agricultural labourer and aged 19, born at Horseheath.

 

He most likely married Emma Wisken.  There is a marriage of George Diss and Emma Wis**** in the district of Stepney in the December quarter 1858 (1c 965).  Since she was born in Carlton (1881 census), the Carlton site gave the possibility of Emma Wisken (baptised 22 June 1834, daughter of Robert and Mary Wisken, of Carleton, farmer).  Emma Wisken did not marry at Carlton.  The Diss website also states that George married Emma Wiskin.

 

In the 1861 census of Egleton Road, Bow, Bromley, Middx., George was aged 29, a general labourer and born in Cambridge.  His wife, Emma, was aged 27, and born in Cambridge.  There was a daughter, Sarah, aged 1 and born in Bromley, Middx.

 

In 1881 he was living at 5, Brunswick Terrace, Three Mile Lane, London, Middx.9, aged 49, a labourer, born at Horseheath.  With him were his wife, Emma, aged 48 and born at Carlton, Cambs., and their children John aged 19, a labourer, George aged 17, a labourer, Robert aged 14, a labourer, Harriett aged 10, Thomas aged 7 and William aged 4.  All born at Bromley Middx.

 

In 1891 at 7, 3 Mill Lane, Bromley, Poplar, George was aged 61 a malt labourer and Emma his wife was aged 60, both born at Carlton, Cambs.  Their children were Robert aged 24 a distiller labourer, Thomas aged 17 an asylum messenger and William aged 14 a foundry labourer, all born at Bromley.  There were two boarders, Henry Lee aged 25 a cellarman born at Snape, Suffolk and Arthur Lee aged 22 a brewers labourer born at Blackburn, Suffolk.

 

George Diss’s death was registered in the Poplar district in the March quarter 1894 aged 63.

 

In 1901 at 42, 3 Mill Lane, Emma was a widow aged 43 (!), living on her own means and born at Carlton, Cambs.  Her unmarried son, William was aged 18 (!) a tinman born in Bromley.  There was a boarder, Walter Phillips, aged 22 doing general work in flour mill and born at Wadesmill, Herts.

 

In 1911, at 86 Teviot Street, Poplar, in 2 rooms, Emma Diss was a widow aged 80.  She had been married for 54 years and had had 7 children 3 of whom had died.  She was born at Carlton, Cambs.  Her son, William was single, aged 34 and a tinsmith (Petroleum and its products) born at Bromley by Bow.

 

Emma’s death was registered in the Poplar district in the quarter 1912 aged 80.

 

George and Emma’s children were:

Sarah Diss, born c.1859 at Bromley, Middx.

John Diss, born at Bromley Middx, and registered in the Poplar district in the December quarter 1861.  He married Ellen Corrigan in the Mile End district in the March quarter 1886.

In 1901, at 11 Hinks Place, Bromley, John was aged 39, a labourer.  His wife, Ellen was aged 39 and their children were Ellen H aged 12, John R aged 9, Thomas W aged 7, Amelia M aged 3 and a daughter aged 8 days, all born in Bromley.

Ellen Diss’s death was registered in the December quarter 1914 in the Poplar district aged 52.

Daughter Diss, born about March 1901.

George Diss (1864 – 1948), born at Bromley Middx, and registered in the Poplar district in the June quarter 1864.  He married Maria Catherine Lock in the Poplar district in the June quarter 1887.

In 1891, at 3, 3mill Lane, Bromley in 2 rooms, George was aged 27 a general labourer and his wife, Maria C. was aged 25.  They were both born in Bromley by Bow.

In 1901, at 14 Edgar Road, Bromley, in 4 rooms, George was aged 37, a general labourer.  His wife, Maria C. was aged 35 and their children were Alice E. aged 8, Harriet C aged 4 and George A aged 2, all born in Bromley.

In 1911, at same address as in 1901, George was aged 47 a general labourer st a starch works.  His wife, Maria Catherine was aged 45.  They had been married for 23 years and had had 5 children of whom 1 had died.  Their children were Alice Elizabeth aged 18 a cardboard box maker and Harriet Catherine aged 14 a thumb holer both at a Box works, and George Alfred aged 12 and Elsie Maud aged 6.  All were born at Bromley by Bow.

In 1939 (register) at 17 Imperial Street, Poplar, George was a chemical hydro operator with a date of birth of 5 March 1864.  His wife, Maria C. had a date of birth 12 November 1865.

George’s death was registered in the Romford district in the March quarter 1948 aged 83.

Maria C’s death was registered in the Romford district in the December quarter 1954 aged 88.

George and Maria’s children were:

Alice Elizabeth Diss, birth registered in the Poplar district in the March quarter 1893.

Harriet Catherine Diss, birth registered in the Poplar district in the September quarter 1896.

George Alfred Diss, birth registered in the Poplar district in the December quarter 1898.

Elsie Maud Diss, birth registered in the Poplar district in the March quarter 1905.

Robert Diss (1866 – 1917), born at Bromley Middx, about September 1866 in the Poplar district.  He married Elizabeth Wells Pierpoint. 

In 1901, at 67 Empson Street, Bromley, Poplar, in 3 rooms, Robert was aged 34 a labourer distillery, born at Bromley.  Elizabeth W his wife was aged 31 and born at Bethnal Green.  Their children were Emily E aged 10 born at Poplar, and Robert W aged 8, Harriet aged 7, Arthur S aged 4, Minnie G aged 3 and Alfred A aged 1, all born at Bromley.

In 1911, same address as 1901, Robert was aged 44 a mill labourer.  His wife, Elizabeth W was aged 40.  They had been married for 20 years and had had 8 children none of whom had died.  Their children were

Robert’s death was registered in the December quarter 1917 in the Poplar district aged 51.

Robert William Diss, born 26 September 1892 at Bromley, Kent.  He married Eleanor D. Rumsby, registered in the Poplar district in the June quarter 1915. 

Harriet Diss, born about 1893 and registered in the June quarter 1894 in the Poplar district.

Arthur Sydney Diss, born about 1896. and registered in the June quarter 1896 in the Poplar district.

Minnie Geraldine Diss, born about 1897 and registered in the December quarter 1897 in the Poplar district.

Alfred Augustus Diss, born about 1899 and registered in the December quarter 1899 in the Poplar district..

Louis Alexander Diss, born about 1904 and registered in the September quarter 1904 in the Poplar district.

Joseph Henry Diss, born about 1906 and registered in the Poplar district in the December quarter 1906.

Ernest C. Diss, birth registered in the Poplar district in the December quarter 1911 (Pierpoint)

Harriet Mary Diss (1870 – 1883), born at Bromley Middx, and registered in the Poplar district in the December quarter 1870.  She, as Harriett, may have died in the Poplar district in the September quarter 1883 aged 13.

Thomas Whiskin Diss (1873 - 1907), born at Bromley Middx, and registered in the Poplar district in the September quarter 1873.  He married Mary Ann Bowden. 

In 1901, at 101 Tevior Street, Bromley, Thomas W. Diss was aged 27, an assistant asylum steward born at Bromley.  His wife was Mary A aged 30 and born in Poplar.  Their children were Thomas A aged 3, Winifred A aged 1 and Victor G. aged less than 1 month, all born in Bromley. 

His death was registered in the September quarter 1907 in the Poplar district, aged 34.

Winifred A. Diss, born about 1899.

Victor G. Diss, born about February 1901.

William Diss, born at Bromley Middx, and registered in the Poplar district in the December quarter 1876.  In 1911 he was with his mother.
