Mary Ann Cutter was baptised 13 July 1856 at Little Abington, a daughter of William Cutter and Sarah formerly Diss.
In 1861 she was at home.
In 1871, at Cambridge Road, Little Abington, next to her family, Mary Ann was a general servant aged 15, born at Abington, in the household of Thomas O. Kent aged 30 born at Fulbourn, a farmer of 430 acres.
She married Charles William
Lucas, at West Wickham, 23 November 1878.
He (X) was of full age, a bachelor of West Wickham,
(no father stated). Mary Ann Cutter
(X) was of full age, a spinster of West Wickham, a daughter of William Cutter,
a labourer.
The witnesses were Tom Cutter and Flora Cutter.
In 1881 Mary A. was living in West Wickham Street, West Wickham. She was aged 25 and born at Little
Abington. Her husband, Charles, was
aged 25, an agricultural labourer, born at Linton and
their child was Dennes (sic), aged 1, born at West
Wickham.
In the 1891 census of West
Wickham, next to White Hall, in 4 rooms, Maryann was aged 35 and born at Little
Abington. Her husband, Charles
Lucas, was aged 35, an employed agricultural labourer
and born at Linton. Their children
were Dennis, aged 11, Agnes aged 9, Charles W. aged 7, Edith S. aged 5,
Beatrice F. aged 3 and Alice L. aged 1, all born in West Wickham.
In the 1901 census of West Wickham, White Hall Cottage (3 rooms), Charles
was aged 45, a horsekeeper on farm, born at Linton,
with his wife, Mary Ann aged 45, born Little Abington and their children Agnes
19, Charles 17 (domestic house boy [worker]), Beatrice 13, Alice 9, Kate 8, and
John 5, all born at West Wickham.
In 1911, at West Wickham in 3 rooms were Charles
Lucas, aged 55, a horseman on farm born at Linton, his wife, Mary Ann aged 55
and born at Little Abington. They
had been married for 32 years and had had 9 children of whom 2 had died. Also with them were their children
Charles aged 27 a farm labourer, Alice aged 21 a
general servant (domestic), Kate aged 18 and John aged 15 a farm labourer, all born at West Wickham.
On a memorial inscription at
West Wickham Parish Church was inscribed: ‘In loving memory of Charles
William Lucas fell asleep March 27 1924 aged 68 also of Agnes Priscilla his
beloved daughter d. Nov 3 1905 age 24 also Mary Ann Lucas d. June 15 1929 age
73 also Denis Lucas PO Rifles 373750 died of wounds in France Dec 2 1917 age
38.
Mary Ann and Charles William had eight children:
Dennis Lucas (1879 - 1917), born 1879 December quarter at West Wickham and died 2 December 1917 in
France. He was buried Rocquigny-Eguancourt Road British Cemetery, Manancourt, France.
Agnes Priscilla Lucas (1881 - 1905), born 1881 September quarter at West Wickham and died 3
November 1905.
