The Family of Henry Cutter (1792 – 1873)

I am grateful to Hedley Martin for some of the information on this page.

He was baptised 25 Dec 1792 at Chrishall, a son of Henry Cutter and his first wife Mary Onion.

He married first Mary Moss (born about 1793) 14 October 1816 at Little Abington.

 

Mary was buried 25 June 1823 at Little Abington.

 

He married secondly Ann Smith (born about 1803 Little Abington) 21 (or 31) March 1826 at Little Abington.

 

In 1851, at Great Abington, he was aged 55, a shepherd born at Chrishall (Chrisal), Essex.  With him was his wife, Ann, aged 46 and born at Linton and children George, unmarried aged 20, a farm labourer born at Little Abington, Susan, unmarried, aged 19, born at Great Abington and Betsy aged 11 and born at Great Abington.

 

Henry died 13 June 1873 was buried 17 June 1873 at Great Abington.

 

In 1881, at Little Abington, Ann was a widow, aged 78 and born at Linton.  With her was her son George, aged 42, an agricultural labourer, born at Great Abington and a lodger, Betsy Hammond, a widow aged 25 and born at Hadstock.

 

Ann was buried 20 November 1882 at Little Abington.

 

Henry and Mary’s children were:

Harriet Cutter (1818 - 1837), baptised 22 March 1818 at Little Abington.  She was buried 22 July 1837 at Little Abington.

Hannah Cutter, baptised 24 December 1820 at Little Abington.  She married James Morley, a waiter, 14 December 1841 at St Andrew the Less, Cambridge.  In 1881, at Falcon Yard, Cambridge, Hannah was aged 60, a widow and annuitant, born at Abingdon (sic), Cambs, with her son, James S. single, aged 35 a cook (N.D.), born at London.

James S. Morley, born about 1845 at London.

Sarah Cutter, baptised 6 April 1823 at Little Abington.

Henry and Ann's children were:

John Cutter (1827 - 1909), baptised 11 March 1827, Little Abington.  He married Ann Salmon (born 4 January 1827 at Linton and baptised 28 February 1827 at Linton, buried 20 June 1907 at Little Abington) 25 January 1846 at Great Abington. 

In 1881, at 29 Village Street, Great Abington, John was aged 54, an agricultural labourer born at Little Abington.  Ann, his wife, was aged 54 and born at Linton.  Their son, William C. was aged 13 and born at Great Abington.

John died at Linton and was buried 30 June 1909 at Little Abington.  He was a shepherd.  John and Ann's children were:

Henry John Cutter (1846 - 1900), baptised 29 November 1846 at Little Abington.  He was a shepherd.  He married Mary Carder (born about 1850 at Little Abington) 28 November 1872 at Little Abington. 

In 1881 in Little Abington, Henry was aged 34, a shepherd, born at Little Abington.  His wife, Mary, was aged 30 and born at Little Abington and their children were William J. Pinner (not Cutter) aged 11, an agricultural labourer and born at Linton, Harriet M., aged 7 and Edward G., aged 4, both born at Little Abington.

In 1891, at North (?) Lodge, Little Abington, Henry was aged 44, a shepherd born at Little Abington.  His wife, Mary was aged 46 and born at Little Abington.  Their children were William John (Cutter) aged 21 an agricultural labourer, born at Linton and Edward G. aged 14, a shepherd and born at Little Abington.

Henry was buried 22 March 1900 at Little Abington.  Mary was buried 13 February 1912 at Little Abington.  Henry and Mary's children were:

Harriet Mary Cutter, born about 1873 at Little Abington.  She married William Henry Dant (a baker, born about 1873 at Chesterton) 2 August 1897 at Little Abington.

Edward George Cutter, baptised 24 September 1876 at Little Abington.  He was a shepherd.  He married Harriet Priscilla Clark (baptised 11 December 1879 at Hildersham) 20 September 1900 at Little Abington.  Edward and Harriet's children were

George Samuel Cutter, baptised 9 February 1851 at Great Abington.  He was a labourer at paper mill.  He married Martha Jane Andrews (born about 1848 at Whittlesford) 21 May 1870 at Whittlesford.  George and Martha's children were

Florence Ellen Cutter, born 1870 at Whittlesford.  She had an illegitimate son.  She married Walter Charles Perrin (born about 1871 at Thriplow) 27 September 1900 at Whittlesford.  Florence's child was

Alfred George Cutter (1883 - 1917), born 21 November 1883 at Whillesford.  He married Emily Emma Carter 29 July 1905 at Whittlesford Congregational Church.  He was killed in action 10 May 1917 at the battle of Arras.  He is commemorated on the Arras memorial, Pas de Calais, France, private 31425 of the 2nd battalion in the Suffolk Regiment.  Emily died 11 September 1977.  Alfred and Emily's children were

Alfred James Cutter, born 20 April 1906 at Duxford, Cambs.  He married first Bessie G. Jarrold 1929 at Ickleton, Cambs.  She died in February 1964.  He married secondly Cecily I Gilby 1966 Cambridge Register Office. 

Mabel Anne Cutter, born 2 July 1910 at Sawston.  She married Robert John Hunt 1934 at Whittlesford, Cambs.  Robert died 27 October 1964.

Emma Anne Cutter (1853 - 1901), baptised 6 February 1853 at Great Abington.  She married James Ellis (born about 1850 at Little Abington) 1875 in the Risbridge district.  Emma was buried 6 September 1901 at Little Abington.  James was buried 2 October 1917 at Little Abington.  He was a plate layer.  Emma and James' children were

Frederick James Cutter, baptised 16 October 1864 at Great Abington.  He was a steel works mill hand.  He married Alice Sophia Crane (born about1864 London Middx.) 1884 St Andrew the Less, Cambridge.  Frederick and Alice's children were

Adelaide Eleanor Laura Cutter, born 5 August 1888 at 83 York Street, Cambridge.  She married Arthur Wesford Sumner (born 18 November 1892 at Heaton Norris, Stockport and died 7 March 1956 at War Memorial Hospital, Wrexham) 10 July 1915 at St Mary's, Brymbo, Wales.  She died 17 February 1951 at Brymbo, N. Wales.

William Charles Cutter (1867 - 1935), baptised 10 June 1867 at Great Abington.  He married Jane Millington (born about 1865 London) 1894 in the Hackney district.  He was buried 15 June 1935 at Little Abington.  He was a gardener.  Jane was buried 11 December 1946 at Little Abington.  William and Jane's child was

Elsie Millington Cutter, born about 1898 at New Southgate, Middx.

Emma Cutter, born Great Abington and baptised 28 September 1828, Little Abington.  She married William Heifer (born about 1830 at Swaffham Prior, Cambs.) 1861 at Cambridge Register Office.  He was an agricultural labourer9. 

In 1881, at High Street, Swaffham Prior, William was aged 50, an agricultural labourer, born at Swaffham Prior.  Emma, his wife, was aged 52 and born at Great Abington.  Their sons were Henry J. aged 18 an agricultural labourer and Charles G. aged 9, both born at Swaffham Prior. 

Emma and William's children were

Henry James Heifer, born about 1862 at Swaffham Prior.  He was an agricultural labourer.  He married Maria Benstead (born about 1869 at Swaffham Prior) 1890 in the Newmarket district.  Henry and Maria's children were

George Cutter, born Little Abington and baptised 30 May 1830, Little Abington. 

In 1851 he was at home with his parents, aged 20 and born at Little Abington.

He was a plumber.  He married first about 1858.  He married secondly Elizabeth Sarah Griffiths (born about 1837, London, Middx.) 1877 in the Shoreditch district. 

In 1881, at 93 Rushmore Road, London, Middx., George (Geo) was aged 48, a plumber's labourer, born at Abington.  Elizabeth S., his wife, was aged 43 and born at London, Middx.  His children were Richard, aged 22, a waiter (inn) born Clapton, Middx and Elizabeth M. aged 13, born at Hackney.  With them also was A. Griffiths, brother-in-law, aged 34, a railway porter goods dept., born at Bethnal Green, Middx.

Elizabeth's death was registered in 1901 in the Shoreditch district. 

George's children were

Richard Frank Read Cutter, born 1859 at Clapton, Middx.  He was a waiter.

Elizabeth Mary A. Cutter, born 1868 at Hackney, Middx.

Susan Cutter, born Great Abington and baptised 11 September 1831, Little Abington.

In 1851 she was at home with her parents, aged 19 and born at Great (sic) Abington.  She married George Fuller (baptised 11 December 1831 at Great Abington) 1861 in the Linton district.  He was a shoemaker.

Her illegitimate children were

Henry John Thomas Cutter(1852 - 1852), baptised 11 April 1852 at Great Abington.  He was buried 15 August 1852 at Great Abington.

Hannah Rebecca Cutter, baptised 3 December 1845 at Great Abington.  She married Richard Andrews (born 1854) 7 November 1874 at Great Abington.  He was a labourer.  Hannah and Richard's children were

Thomas James Cutter (1857 - 1857), baptised 24 September 1857 at Great Abington.  He was buried 28 September 1857 at Great Abington.

George Zachariah Fuller, baptised 13 July 1862 at Great Abington.  He was an agricultural labourer.

Frederick William Fuller, baptised 28 August 1864 at Great Abington.  He was an agricultural labourer.

James Crane Fuller, baptised 8 July 1866 at Great Abington.

Joseph Cutter (1833 - 1916), born 1833 at Great Abington and baptised 20 October, 1833, Little Abington.  He married Rebecca Serjent (born 16 September 1840 and baptised 25 October 1840 at Linton) 4 May 1861 at Little Abington. 

In 1871, at Cambridge Road, next but one to Alfred W. Cutter, on the previous census page was the family and at the top of the next page was Ada aged 6 born at Great Abington, Arthur aged 4 and Lucy aged 8 months, both born at Little Abington.

In 1881 they were living at Village Church Lane, Little Abington.  Joseph was aged 46, an agricultural labourer, born at Great Abington.  Rebecca was aged 39 and born at Linton.  Their children were Stephen C. aged 19, an agricultural labourer, Arthur aged 14 an agricultural labourer, Lucy A. aged 10, Peter E. aged 5 and Edith E. aged 2, all born at Little Abington. 

Joseph was buried 9 March 1916 at Little Abington. 

In 1891, in Church Street, Little Abington (next to Henry W. Cutter and Mary Ann), in 4 rooms, Joseph was aged 56, an employed farm labourer, born at Great Abington.  His wife, Rebecca, was aged 49 and born at Linton.  Their children were Stephen aged 29 an employed builders labourer, Arthur aged 24 an employed farm labourer, Lucy aged 20 (not employed), Peter aged 15, an employed farm labourer and Edith aged 12, all born at Little Abington.

Rebecca was buried 24 June 1918 at Little Abington.

Ada Jane Cutter (1864 - 1878), born at Great Abington and baptised 31 July 1864 and buried 19 February 1878 at Little Abington.

Arthur Cutter, born at Little Abington and baptised 17 March 1867 at Little Abington.  He was a horse keeper.  He married Charlotte Amy Aves (born about 1869 at Pimlico, London) in 1900 in the Shoreditch district.  Arthur and Charlotte's children were

Frederick Arthur Cutter, born 31 December 1909 at Little Abington and baptised 13 March 1910 at Little Abington.  He married Florence Plumb (born 23 December 1909) 15 February 1941 at Cambridge Register Office.  Florence died 14 July 1991.

Martha Elizabeth Cutter (1873 - 1874), baptised 23 November 1873 at Little Abington.  She was buried 23 March 1874 at Great Abington.

(There is the baptism of Harriet Mary, 30 November 1873 at Great Abington, daughter of Joseph and Rebecca, but this may be a register error for Harriet Mary, daughter of Henry and Mary, whose baptism has not yet been found in spite of extensive searching by Colin Hatton.)

Edith Eliza Cutter, baptised 1 December 1878 at Little Abington.  She married Walter John Ashman (born about 1879) 18 January 1903 at Little Abington.  He was a labourer.

Charles Cutter (1836 - 1914), baptised 26 June 1836 at Great Abington.  He was a labourer. 

In 1881 he was at home with his mother, unmarried, aged 42 and born at Great Abington.  He married Harriet Mayes (born about 1853 at Sturmer, Essex) 26 August 1883 at Little Abington.  She was buried 14 June 1909 at Little Abington.  Charles was buried 31 March 1914 at Little Abington.  Charles and Harriet's children were

Charles Henry Cutter (1885 - 1917), baptised 5 April 1885 at Little Abington.  He married Ellen Cootes 1910 at Hinxton, Cambs.  He was killed in action 28 April 1917 at the battle of Arras.  He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.  He was a lance corporal (17365) 11th battalion Suffolk Regiment.  Charles and Ellen's children were

Thomas Charles Patten, born 3 September 1913 and baptised 26 October 1913 at Little Abington.  He married Elsie M. Chapman, 1938 at Cambridge Register Office.

Winifred Mary Patten, born 29 July 1922 and baptised 15 October 1922 at Little Abington.

George Sidney Cutter (1890 - 1948), baptised 26 July 1890 at Little Abington.  He was an agricultural labourer.  He married Margaret Smith (born about 1895) 2 October 1920 at Little Abington.  She was buried 1959 at Little Abington.  He was buried 12 March 1948 at Little Abington. 

Montague Cutter (1893 - 1916), baptised 28 October 1893 at Little Abington.  He was killed in action 1 July 1916 in the battle of the Somme.  He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.  He was a private (20354) in the 11th Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment.

Anne Jemima Cutter, baptised 30 June 1839, Great Abington.  In 1881, she may have been at Felstead Grammar School, Felstead, Essex, an unmarried domestic servant aged 39, a cook born at Great Abington. 

She had an illegitimate daughter

Sarah Anne Vinnicombe (Cutter), baptised 15 March 1856 at Great Abington. 

In 1881, at Park Villa, Cambridge, she was a housemaid, single, aged 25 and born at Great Abington, in the household of Elliott Smith, a magistrate aged 71. 

She married James Jeffy (born about 1859 at Great Shelford) 1885 at St Andrew the Less, Cambridge.

Betsy (1840 - 1912), baptised 20 September 1840, Great Abington. 

In 1851 she was at home with her parents, aged 11 and born at Great Abington.

She married first James Westcott Vinnicombe.  She married secondly Walter Andrews (a labourer, born about 1838 at Hinxton and baptised 25 December 1844 at Hinxton), 10 October 1868 at Great Abington. 

In 1881, at Main Road, Hinxton, Walter was aged 45, an agricultural labourer.  With him was Elizabeth, his wife aged 41 and children Counseleth aged 12, Henry aged 10, Emma aged 7, Harriet aged 5 and Connelious aged 1.  All were born at Hinxton.

Betsy was buried 25 February 1912 at Hinxton, Cambs.  Walter was buried 16 October 1915 at Hinxton.
