The Family of Nathan Challis (1830 – 1908)

Nathan Challis was born 8 January (year not stated), at Ousden and baptised at Hargrave, 30 May 1830, a son of Robert Challis and Sarah formerly Cook, Robert was of Ousden, a husbandman.

 

In the 1841 census of Little Ousden, he was at home with his parents, aged 11.

 

In the census of 1861 of Cancross Green, Wickhambrook, Nathan was a lodger in the household of Thomas Retter (aged 74 a labourer born at Wickhambrook).  Nathan was unmarried, aged 30 (it looked like 29 altered to 30), born at Wickhambrook.

 

In the 1871 census of Little Ousden, Nathan, unmarried and a labourer aged 41 was living with his father, Robert, a widower aged 74 and a labourer.  Both were born at Ousden.

 

In the census of 1881 of Cottage, Ousden, Nathan Challis was living alone, an unmarried farm labourer aged 47, born at Little Ousden.

 

There is a possible marriage (perhaps to Mary Hirst) for Nathan Challis in the March quarter 1886 in the Thingoe registration district.

 

In 1891 he was living in three rooms, at Cottage, Little Ousden (parish of Hargrave), aged 59, an agricultural labourer (employee), born at Little Ousden.  Mary, his wife, was aged 59 and born at Wickhambrook.

 

In the 1901 census he may have been living at Great Knowles Green, in 3 rooms, aged 71, a labourer on road, born at Hargrave and also married to Mary aged 70, born at Wickhambrook. 

 

There is a death registration for Nathan Challis in the Bury St Edmunds district (includes Hargrave in 1908) in the December quarter 1908.  He was aged 77.
