The Family of James Challis (1820 – 1860) of Depden

James Challis was born 6 January (year not stated), at Depden, and baptised at Hargrave, 25 December 1820, a son of Robert Challis and Sarah formerly Cook.

He married Lucy Bumpsted in the Dec quarter 1839 (Thingoe reg. dist.).

In the 1851 census of Hall Farm, Depden, James was a servant (married) aged 31, a farm labourer, born at Ousden, in the household of Mrs Jane Green, farmer.  Although the family was living at Depden at the time of his baptism they seen to have moved to Ousden soon afterwards for they were living at Ousden when Anne was baptised.  James may well have thought he was born at Ousden.

In the 1851 census of Potash, Depden, Lucy Challis was married, aged 34, a groom’s wife born Chedburgh.  Her husband was not at home.  Her children were Mary Ann (9, born Wickhambrook), George (4, born Depden) and Stephen (2, born Depden).

James was buried at Depden in 1860 (day and month left blank) aged 40.

Lucy Challis, a widow of full age (father Stephen Bumsted, labourer) was married to George Balls at Depden 2 December 1865 and the witnesses were George Challis (X) and Sarah Challis (a good firm confident signature).

James and Lucy’s children were:

Mary Ann Challis, born c. 1841/2 at Wickhambrook and baptised 22 April 1841 at Wickhambrook (Challis, servant).

George Challis, born c. 1846/7 at Depden and baptised 31 May 1846 at Depden (Challice, labourer).

Stephen Challis, born c. 1848/9 at Depden
