The Family of Eliza Wright formerly Challis (1832 – 1919) of Hargrave, Suffolk and Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham

Eliza Challis was born 20 April (year not stated), at Ousden and baptised at Hargrave, 25 December 1832, a son of Robert Challis and Sarah formerly Cook, Robert was of Ousden, a husbandman.

In the 1841 census of Little Ousden, she was at home with her parents aged 9.

She probably had an illegitimate child, Robert William, baptised 10 August 1851 at Ousden, (Little Ousden, spinster).

She may have been a witness at her brother George's marriage in 1852, at Wickhambrook.

She (Eliza Challes) married Robert Wright in the Risbridge district in the March quarter 1854 (4a 443).  Risbridge includes Wickhambrook.

In the 1861 census of Cock's Head Inn, Hargrave, Robert Wright, was aged 32, a publican and born at Wickhambrook.  His wife, Eliza, was aged 29 and born at Ousden.  Their children were Sarah, aged 7 and born at Ousden, Mary Ann aged 5 born at Depden, Harry aged 4 and Ann aged 18 months, both born at Hargrave.  Eliza's father, Robert Challis was also with them and there were two servants, Joseph Frost aged 15, a brewer, born at Hargrave and Katherine Riches, aged 12 and born at Rattlesden.

In the 1871 census of Cock's Head Inn, Hargrave, Robert Wright was aged 45, a licensed victualler, born at Wickhambrook.  His wife, Eliza, was aged 37, and born at Ousden.  Their children were Sarah Ann, aged 16, born at Depden, Mary Ann aged 15 and born at Hargrave, Harry aged 13, Ann aged 11, Ellen aged 9, Frederick aged 7, George aged 6, Joshua aged 2 and Kate aged 6 months, all born at Hargrave.  There was also a lodger, Eliza Sargent, single aged 53, a dressmaker and born at Hargrave.

In 1874, the Post office Directory names Robert Wright as the publican whereas Whites Directory names Robert Taylor, so this year seems to be when Robert Wright and family left.

By 1881 Robert and Eliza had moved to Co. Durham and Robert had changed his career from licensed victualler to coal miner.  Perhaps he could earn more money to support his large family?  In the 1881 census, at High Hope Street, Crook and Billy Row, Co. Durham, Robert was aged 56, a coal miner, born at Wickhambrook.  His wife, Eliza, was aged 51 and born at Ousden, and their children were Frederick aged 18, a coal miner putter, George aged 16, a coal miner putter, Joshua aged 12, Kate aged 10 and Laura aged 9, all born at Hargrave.
