The Family of Ambrose Brewster (1756/7 – 1836) of Wickhambrook

He was baptised 27 February 1756/7 at Wickhambrook, a son of Abraham Brewster and Francis.

 

He (X) married Mary Bradfield (X) 15 November 1777 at Wickhambrook, after banns (12, 19 and 26 October 1777).  They were singleman and spinster of the parish.  The witnesses were Thomas Webb and Jonathan Smith.

 

Mary Brewster was buried at Wickhambrook 28 May 1823.  She was aged 67.

 

Ambrose Brewster was buried at Wickhambrook 25 August 1836.  He was aged 79.

 

The children of Ambrose and Mary were:

 

Elizabeth Brewster (1779 – 1833), baptised as Bett, 19 September 1779 at Wickhambrook.  She married George Pettit at Wickhambrook, 29 Oct 1799 and was buried at Wickhambrook, 31 May 1833.

 

George Brewster, baptised 1 May 1785 at Wickhambrook.

He married Mary Cooke, 25 December 1814 at Wickhambrook.

In 1841, at Bunsfield End, Wickhambrook, George Brewster was an agricultural labourer aged 50.  With him were Mary aged 50, Catherine aged 55, Abraham aged 20, Elizabeth aged 15 and Catherine aged 8.  All were born in Suffolk. 

In 1851, at Genesis Green, Wickhambrook, George Brewster was aged 64 and a shepherd.  His wife, Mary, was aged 62, daughter Kitty (short for Catherine) was aged 18 and Ambrose, a grandson, was aged 6.  All were born in Wickhambrook.  (In 1861 at Genesis Green, Wickhambrook, Ambrose Burster (?) was aged 16, an agricultural labourer and head of the household.  There was a lodger, a widow, Elizabeth Challis, aged 71 and a pauper. Both were born in Wickhambrook.)

John Brewster, baptised 18 March 1815 (needs checking – reference is to Suffolk BTs)1.

Abraham Brewster (1820 – 1895), born 1 February 1820 and baptised 5 April 1820 (formerly at Badmondisfield Hall – Independent Wickhambrook). 

Abraham Brewster married Lettice Edgeley in the Risbridge district in the September quarter 1842.

In 1861 (Index), in the Thingoe district, living together were Abraham Brewster aged 43, Lettice aged 53 and Harriet aged 16 all born at Wickhambrook.

In 1881 Abraham was living at Takers Lane, Stowmarket.  He was aged 60, born at Wickhambrook and an agricultural labourer.  His wife, Lettice, was aged 72 and also born at Wickhambrook.

There are death registrations in the Stow district (includes Stowmarket) for Letitia Brewster, aged 86 in the December quarter 1892 and Abram Brewster aged 75 in the June quarter 1895.

Susannah Brewster, born 28 January 1822 and baptised 1 March 1822 (formerly at Badmondisfield Hall – Independent Wickhambrook).

Elizabeth Brewster, born 25 August 1825 and baptised 12 March 1826 (formerly at Badmondisfield Hall – Independent Wickhambrook).

Catherine Brewster, born 30 May 1832 and baptised 28 October 1832 (formerly at Badmondisfield Hall – Independent Wickhambrook).

She married Samuel Hurrell in the Risbridge district (includes Wickhambrook) in the September quarter 1852.

In 1861, at Chapel Green, Wickhambrook, Samuel Hurrell was aged 31, an agricultural labourer. Katherine, his wife, was aged 29 and their children were Rebecca aged 8, George aged 6, John aged 4 and William aged 2.  They were all born at Wickhambrook.

In 1871 at Chapel Green, Wickhambrook, Samuel Hurrell was aged 39, an agricultural labourer and Catherine, his wife, was aged 38.  Their children were George aged 14, John aged 12, William aged 10, Jane aged 4 and Lizzie aged 2.  They were all born at Wickhambrook.

In 1881, at Crow Cross Green, Wickhambrook, she was aged 51.  Her husband, Samuel, was aged 52 an agricultural labourer, and their children were Jane aged 14 and Lizzie aged 12.  All were born at Wickhambrook.

John Brewster (1795 – 1855), baptised 17 May 1795 at Wickhambrook

In 1841, at Ashfield Green, Wickhambrook, John was aged 45, a carpenter.  With him were Mary aged 45, Caroline aged 20, Simion aged 12 and Emma aged 8.  There was also Caroline Petchey (?) aged 3.  All were born in the county.

In 1851, at Ashfield Green, Wickhambrook, John was aged 55 and a carpenter.  Maryann his wife was aged 56.  Their children were Simeon aged 22 (unmarried) and Emmah aged 12.  There was a granddaughter, Jane Parker aged 5 and a visitor Caroline (or Emeline) Peachy aged 13.  All were born at Wickhambrook.

In 1861, at Ashfield Green, Wickhambrook, Mary Brewster was a widow aged 67, a shopkeeper.  With her were Simeon aged 32, unmarried, a carpenter, and Emma, aged 21.  There was also a granddaughter, Jane Parker, aged 15.  All were born in Wickhambrook.

In 1871, at Ashfield Green, Wickhambrook, Mary Brewster was a widow aged 76, a shopkeeper.  With her was her unmarried daughter Emma, aged 36, a dressmaker.  Both were born at Wickhambrook.

John was buried at Wickhambrook, with his wife, Mary Ann.  Their headstone records that John died March 9 1855 aged 60 years and Mary Ann wife of John died 19 Feb 1875 aged 82 years.  John and Mary’s children were

Caroline Brewster, baptised 29 July 1821 at Wickhambrook (BTs), daughter of John and Mary.  She married William Parker in the December quarter 1845 in the Risbridge district.  Their children were

Simeon Brewster (1829 – 1914), baptised 26 April 1829 at Wickhambrook (BTs), son of John and Mary.

In the GRO index, Simeon’s marriage to Susan Pryke in the Risbridge district appears twice, in the March quarter and again in the June quarter 1865.

In 1871, at Bury Road, Wickhambrook, he was aged 42, a carpenter with 3½ acres (orchard?).  Susan, his wife was aged 43 and with them was a niece, Emma Parker, aged 16.  All were born at Wickhambrook.

In 1881, at Wickhambrook, Simeon was aged 52, a carpenter, born at Wickhambrook and Susan, his wife, was aged 53 and also born at Wickhambrook.

In 1911 (Index), in the Risbridge district, Simeon was aged 82 and Susan was aged 84.

Susan’s death was probably registered in the June quarter 1912 in the Risbridge district.  She was aged 85.

Simeon’s death was registered in the June quarter 1914 in the Risbridge district.  He was aged 85.

Emma Brewster (1832 – 1895), baptised 9 September 1832 at Wickhambrook, daughter of John and Mary Ann.

In 1881 (transcript), at Ashfield Green, Wickhambrook there is an Emma Branston, aged 47, unmarried, a shopkeeper, born at Wickhambrook.  With her was a lodger, Emma Baker, aged 14 and born in Wickhambrook.  Emma Branston looks like Emma Brewster.

There is a death registration for Emma Brewster in the June quarter 1895 in the Risbridge district.  She was aged 64 (consistent with a baptism in 1831 or 2).
