The Family of Florence Lee formerly Asbery (1876 – 1964)

I am grateful to Roy Danson who provided much of the following information.

She was born 19 February 1876 at Kimberworth Road, Rotherham, a daughter of John Asbery and Hannah Elizabeth formerly Vollans. She had auburn hair, which none of her children or grandchildren inherited.

In the 1881 census of 20 Kimberworth Road, Florence was living with her family and aged 5, and born in Masbrough.

 

In the 1891 census of 38 Kimberworth Road, Masbrough, Rotherham, Florence was living with her family, aged 15 and born at Kimberworth.

 

She (aged 23, of Kimberworth) married by banns Frank William Lee (aged 28, a bachelor of Fairfield, Derbyshire, born 24 January 1871 at Worcester, to Richard Lee, farmer), 21 September 1899 at St Thomas Kimberworth (registered Rotherham 9c 1059 September quarter), a railway goods guard.  The marriage transcript gives Frank’s occupation as guard, and the witnesses were John Asbery (grocer) and Margaret Ellen Asbery.

 

In the 1901 census of Alma Street, Fairfield, Buxton, she is aged 25, born at Kimberworth, with her husband Frank W. Lee, aged 30, a railway guard (worker), born Strentham, Worcs and their daughter Kathleen E. aged 9 months, born at Fairfield.

 

In 1911, at 66 Kings Road Fairfield, Buxton, in 5 rooms, Frank William Lee was aged 40, a railway goods guard born at Strensham, Worcs.  Florence was aged 35 and born at Masbrough, Yorks. and their children were Kathleen Emily aged 10, Constance Annie aged 9, Hilda Mary aged 8, Dorris Lilian aged 5, Frank Asbery aged 3, Florence Elizabeth aged 2, Richard Roy aged 1 and Joseph William aged 1 month, all born at Fairfield, Buxton.

 

In 1939 (register) Florence Lee was living at 66 Kings Road, Buxton MB with an exact birth date.  With her were Frank W Lee a retired railway goods guard with a date of birth of 23 January 1871, Sidney Lee, single, a shop assistant food stuffs with a date of birth of 27 July 1915 and Florence E Portas, a widow with a birth date of 10 August 1908 a part-time paid daily help. 

 

Florence died 28 March 1964 and is buried in the churchyard at Fairfield, Buxton, with Frank.  A few graves away lies her son Sidney, who died in WW2 and his death brought on the death of Frank who died a few months later.  Frank died 15 June 1941 aged 70.

 

Florence and Frank’s children were:

Kathleen Emily Lee (1900 – 1995), born 2 June 1900 at Stonecliffe Terrace, Buxton. 

In 1911 (Index), in Buxton, she was at home with her parents, aged 10.

She married Arthur Jones (registered in the Chapel en le Frith district in the March quarter 1926) and lived at 32 Ronald Street, Stanley, Liverpool 13 (1965).  There is a likely death entry in the GRO indexes for a Kathleen Emily Jones (born 2 June 1900) in the Liverpool district in the month of April 1995. 

Constance Annie Lee (1901 – 1978).  She was born 25 June (1939 register has July) 1901. 

In 1911, in Buxton, she was at home with her parents, aged 9.

She married George O. Thomas (marriage registered in the Chapel en le Frith district in the September quarter 1935).  In the 1939 register, at 11 Fir Street, Irlam UD, Constance A, with a birth date of 25 July 1901, is with George O Thomas,  a chemist coke ovens with a date of birth of 26 August 1897, ARP warden, and one other whose record is closed.  Constance Annie Thomas’s death was registered in the June quarter 1978 in the Trafford district, with a date of birth of 25 July 1901.

Hilda Mary Lee (1903 – 1989), born 23 March 1903. 

In 1911, in Buxton, she was at home with her parents, aged 8.  In 1939 (register) Hilda M Lee date of birth 23 March 1903, paid domestic duties, was living in the Buxton district with Gladys M Mauden and Alfred Mauden at The Manor House, Mye Road, Buxton.  Hilda Mary Lee with birth date of 23 March 1903 died in the December quarter 1989 in the High Peak district.

Elsie Asbery Lee (1905 – 1905).  Her birth was registered in the March quarter 1905 and her death aged 0, was registered in the June quarter 1905, in the Chapel en le Frith district.

Doris Lilian Lee (1906 – 1998).  She was born 16 March 1906 at Alma Street.  In 1911, in Buxton, she was at home with her parents, aged 5.

She married George Danson, (born 1899 at Salford and was a steelworks charge hand at Irlam, Lancs) at Buxton 19 November 1932.  She died 9 September 1998 aged 92. 

Frank Asbery Lee (1907 – 1971), born 21 August 1907 at Kings Road.  In 1911, in Buxton, he was with his parents, aged 3.

He married Ann Bradbury (registered as Martha A.B. Bradbury in the Chapel-en-le-Frith district in the December quarter 1940).  His death was registered in the June quarter 1971 in the Chapel-en-le-Frith district with a birth date of 21 August 1907. 

Florence Elizabeth Lee (1908 – 1977), born 10 August 1908.  In 1911, in Buxton, she was at home with her parents, aged 2.

She married Horace Portas in the Chapel en le Frith district in the June quarter 1934.  Horace died as a young man, death registered in the Chapel en le Frith district in the December 1937 quarter, aged 34.  In 1939 (register), she was with her parents, a widow, born 10 August 1908 and a part-time paid daily help.   Florence Elizabeth Portas died 11 July 1977 (at Buxton? and registered in the High Peak district with date of birth 10 August 1908).  She was of Birch Nook, 916 Buxton Road, Bosley, Macclesfield.  Probate was granted 10 January 1978 at Sheffield.

Richard Roy Lee (1909 – 1996), born 30 September 1909.  In 1911, in Buxton, he was at home with his parents, aged 1.  His death was registered in the High Peak district in the March quarter 1996 with a birth date of 30 September 1909. 

Joseph William Lee (1911 – 1991), born 22 February 1911.  In 1911, in Buxton, he was at home with his parents, aged 1 month.

He married Doris Battersby in the Stoke district in the September quarter 1937.  In the 1939 register he, with a date of birth 22 February 1911, a railway signalman, was living at Oak Avenue, Disley, Cheshire with Doris, date of birth 23 April 1913 and no others.  His death was registered in the Stoke on Trent district in the June quarter 1991 with the date of birth 22 February 1911. 

Gertrude Alice Lee (1912 – 1996), born 15 March 1912 and birth registered in the Chapel-en-le-Frith district in the March quarter 1912.  In 1939 with the same birth date, at Tregenna, Manchester Road, Chapel-en-le-Frith, she was living in the household of a solicitor, Stuart Richardson, as a domestic servant with 3 others and one whose record is closed.  Her death, with the same birth date was registered in the June quarter 1996 in the High Peak district.  She was never married.

Cicely Eva Lee, born 6 July 1914 and birth registered in the Chapel-en-le-Frith district in the September quarter 1914.  She (as Cicely) married Harold Hibbert in the Chapel en le Frith district in the December quarter 1937.

Sidney Lee (1915 - 1941), born 27 July 1915.  He was engaged to be married to Beattie Evans.  In 1939 he was with his parents, born 27 July 1915 single and a shop assistant food stuffs.  He died in an air raid at Birkenhead during military service, 12 March 1941.
