In the census of 1861 of Enford, he was aged 30, an agricultural labourer, his wife Elizabeth was aged 31, and their children were George 11, Eli 6 and with them was William's widowed mother, Letitia, aged 72, a pauper. All were born at Enford.

In the 1871 census of Enford, he was aged 46 (but more likely 40), an agricultural labourer, his wife Elizabeth was aged 41 and his children were George 20, an agricultural labourer, Eli 16, James 8, Ann 6 and Alfred 3. All were born at Enford.

William and Elizabeth's children were:

1. George. He was born 20 April 1850 and baptised 20 May 1850 at Enford (of Compton, labourer)
2. Eli. He was born 16 July 1854 and baptised 17 September 1853 at Enford (of Enford, labourer)
3. James. He was born 22 February 1863 and baptised 3 May 1863 at Enford (of Enford, labourer)
4. Ann. She was born about 1864/5 at Enford
5. Alfred. He was born about 1867/8 at Enford
