Susan Challis (1855 - 1918)

She was born 29 October 1855 at Ousden and baptised 25 December 1855 at Ousden, a daughter of George Challis (labourer) and Sarah formerly Crack.

 

In the 1881 census of Brindley Villa, Salters Hill, Lambeth, Surrey, she was aged 25, a domestic servant, born at Ousden, Suffolk, in the household of William Rowe, a widower and former civil engineer aged 34.

 

In 1891 at 16 Blackwater Road, Eastbourne (St Saviour's parish), Susan was aged 34, a housemaid, born at Ousden, Suffolk.  She was one of four servants in the household of four sisters, one of whom was married to a vicar.  The head of the household was the eldest sister. Emma J.A. Faulkener.

 

In the 1901 census of Langdales, Grange Road, Eastbourne, Susan was aged 44, a domestic nurse, born at Ousden.

 

In the 1911 census, at 29 Grange Road, Eastbourne, Susan Challis was aged 53, single and a maid domestic and born at Ouseden.  Sophia Faulkner, 85, was the head of the household and living with four servants.

 

She is buried at Depden close to her parents’ and uncle’s graves.  The inscription reads “In loving memory of Susan daughter of George and Sarah Challis who died May 14th 1918 aged 62 years  Until the day break”.

 

Susan’s will was dated 10 May 1915.  She was a spinster of Minden, Silverdale Road, Eastbourne.  She appointed her sister Kate Jane Challis and Frederick Challis of Attleton Green, Wickhambrook, bailiff, to be her executors.  She left her estate to Kate Jane Challis if she was still single, and if married, then half with the other half equally divided between her other brothers and sisters.  Her witnesses were Frederick William Ratliff and Louisa Ratliff, both of 37, Jevington Gardens, Eastbourne.

 

Probate of her will was granted at Bury St Edmunds, 2 July 1918, to Kate Jane Challis, spinster, the sister, of Depden.  Susan was of Depden, a spinster, and died 14 May 1918.  Her effects were £485 11s. 3d.
